INTRODUCTION

Telematics is the combination of communication and information technology that moves information to and from mobile vehicles. Automotive Telematics is integration of vehicle control and monitoring systems with location-tracking devices locationand wireless telecommunications Examples: General Motors OnStar and Mercedes-Benz MercedesTeleAid service Revenues over $1.7 billion and number of subscribers more than 11 billion by 2004

TWO DESIGN PHILOSOPHIES

DaimlerChrysler and Delphi shares the driving tasks between driver and the car Motorola limits its system to control the information the driver receives Motorola s Driver Advocate System ranks information on the basis of its importance Delphi system may even take over the driving task

TWO DESIGN PHILOSOPHIES

CHALLENGES AHEAD

Advances in medical electronics have led to dreaming of accidentaccident-free cars with a system that can read a driver s mind Vehicle notices a problem, communicates to garage and fixes appointment Rouse drowsy driver by seat vibration, lowering windows to provide a gust of cool air or simply telling them to pull off the road

MAYBACH!

USES

Notify authorities of an accident Track stolen vehicles Provide navigation assistance to drivers Call emergency roadside assistance Perform remote monitoring of the vehicle

LIMITATIONS

Phones cannot be removed from the car Customers cannot choose a cellular service provider Limited to luxury cars Voice recognition system may not work at higher speeds

CONCLUSION
In the future cars will make travel safer by looking over drivers shoulders, so to speak keeping their attention from being pulled away from the road, and finding ways to reduce the hazard should a driver s focus stray. All these are possible through automotive telematics. Telematics devices may be suitable for luxury cars and are costly, but our life is more precious than money
