A plastic-coated disk that stores digital data, such

as music or text, as tiny pits etched into the surface and is read with a laser scanning the surface. The disc is rotated rapidly, and a laser is reflected off the disc to an optical sensor, which is sampled periodically. . If the laser strikes the flat area between pits, the sensor picks up the reflection and registers the digital value 1. If the laser strikes one of the pits, it is deflected from the sensor, and the sample value is a digital 0.

The Optical Disk Family

CD uses 780 nanometer Infrared lasers. Limited

to 700 MB maximum capacity per side DVD uses 650 nanometer Red lasers. Limited to 8.5 GB maximum capacity per side BD needs 405 nanometer Blue lasers. Capable of 25 GB 50 GB capacity per side

Optical Disc Packaging


Optical disc packaging is the packaging that

accompanies CDs, DVDs, Blue Rays and other formats of optical media. Most of the packaging is rigid and semi-rigid and designed to protect the media from scratches and other types of exposure and physical damage.

A Case Jewel jewel case has been in use since the compact disc was

first released in 1982. It is a three-piece plastic case, measuring 142 mm 125 mm 10 mm, which usually contains a compact disc along with the liner notes and a back card. Two opposing transparent halves are hinged together to form the casing, the back half holding a media tray that grips the disc by its hole. All three parts are made of injection-molded polystyrene. Jewel cases are occasionally used for DVDs as well as CDs, Blank Blu-ray Disc media is also most commonly sold in standard-width jewel cases.

An improved variant of Jewel Case wherein 2 CDs

are packed. In place of the back media tray snapped into the back cover, the tray is modified and becomes an independent part of the Jewel Case and CDs are secured in the front and back sides.

The Slim Case


The Slim Case is also a jewel case, but with half the

thickness of a standard CD jewel case. It is a two-piece plastic case, measuring 142 mm x 125 mm x 5 mm, which usually contains a compact disc along with the inlay. They are made with translucent or transparent polystyrene, and are often available in multiple colors. A stronger alternative is made from semi-opaque, semi-flexible polypropylene which is strong enough to protect the disc, but flexible enough not to break easily.

Super Jewel Case


Super jewel box is an all-new package, designed especially for

storing DVDs. It is based on the original CD jewel case patents and includes all of the benefits of the original. Have significant enhancements including a new and patented single/double disc spindle designed for DVDs, stronger hinges, a new clasp and much greater durability. The depth of the disc tray is deeper, allowing two discs to be placed on top of each other. Mini jewel cases are used for 8 cm CD and DVD media; similar cases without the hub are used for MiniDisc and (magnetic) Zip disk media.

Sleeve Packaging
The simplest, least expensive package is a paper

envelope. More expensive versions add a transparent window to the envelope allowing the disc label to be seen. The envelope can also be made out of spunbonded polyethylene (trade-named Tyvek). This is both more durable and less abrasive than paper. It is also often used in software packages,

Kora Pack
This is a retail pack with good display and can be

hanged for convenience in store retail racks. Pearlised polypropylene is printed on an HP Indigo digital press and the disc is packed using Kora a FFS machine. A separator is online inserted between two CDs to avoid scratches.

Digipak
A particular type of CD case, which essentially

consists of a plastic CD tray glued inside a folding cardboard cover. Despite being made of paper, they were once considered a more environmentally-friendly alternative to jewel boxes. However, they remain less common than jewel cases due to higher manufacturing costs and lower resistance to wear (particularly shopwear).

Digibook
The digital book has a black hard plastic cover with

outer cover sheet pocket for inserting printed cover sheet; It contains 6 clear hard plastic double disc pages for holding up to 12 discs in all; there are literature clips on the inside left like a DVD case for holding additional literature; this is an excellent and impressive method for packaging a multiple disc set.

Blister Pack
Its becoming very popular both in case of normal and

mini-discs. In the case of mini disc and jewel cases the blister is made out of a 400 micron PET sheet. The front and back is PET and there is a back up card with the necessary graphics and text content. For normal discs the blister is made out of a 400 micron PET sheet. There is a back card which has got special HSL coating on it for proper sealing of PET.

Discbox Slider
The Discbox Slider (also called DBS) is a disc

packaging concept in 100% carton board, found both in CD and DVD sized packaging formats. The DBS case opens up from the side by moving the slider part (on which the disc is resting) from the sleeve. Considered as one of the most environmental friendly CD or DVD packaging options as it is 100% recyclable.

Keep Case
A keep case is the most common type of DVD packaging.
It is slightly taller than a Jewel case, and is made of much

softer, less brittle plastic (polypropylene rather than polystyrene), so it does not break as easily. They usually hold one or two discs, but are capable of holding up to six discs. Slimmer keep cases, so called "Slim-paks" or "Thinpaks" typically used for DVD box sets consisting of the thin keep cases stored in a cardboard box.

mainly for films, has a cardboard outer sleeve, and inside, folds out to reveal several plastic trays for the DVDs similar to digipaks. Bulk Packaging
Slim and jewel cases are further packed in paper board

cartons or bundled with plastic film for retail markets. The pack could be in 5s or 10s or 20s. Blank CD and DVD media are often sold in bulk packages called spindles or, less formally, cake boxes. This type of packaging consists of a round, clear plastic cup that mates bayonet-style to a base with a central post that holds a stack of discs; dummy discs made of clear polycarbonate with no recording surface are often packed on the ends of the stack to avoid scratches from contact with the hard plastic of the packages.

Bulk Packaging
Such packages have been designed to hold anywhere from ten

up to 100 discs, and offer the user multiple options for packaging the finalized disc.

Handle Pack
This is a very innovative pack.
This packaging consists of a round, plastic base with a central

post that holds a stack of discs. The central post has screwing thread at the top portion. A separate top part is fitted with the thread and tightened properly. This is shrink wrapped with Shrink Sleeve. The final pack looks very trendy and uses minimal plastics. However, this requires more protection during transportation.
