Rise to Power

Adolf Hitler was born on

April 20, 1889 in Braunau, Austria. Adolf was the 4th child, the previous 3 had died. Baby Adolf had the nickname, Adi.

 Attended a Benedictine monastery school where he took part in

the choir. His father wanted him to become a civil servant, but after his father died, he dropped out of high school and attempted to get into the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts - he failed.

He signed up for military service at the start of WW I. He joined a Bavarian unit of the German Army.

 Hitler was excited to defend Germany and the

fatherland. His highest rank was Corporal. he would take out his watercolors and paint the landscapes of war. In 1916 he got injured and was hospitalized in Germany. But was sent back in March 1917 (upon his request)

 Was awarded the Iron Cross

twice. (5 medals overall) Single handedly captured 4 French soldiers.

 Hitler found it hard to swallow defeat.

To Hitler, the politicians who signed

the Armistice would be know as November Criminals. Treaty of Versailles, as seen by Hitler, humiliated Germany.

 Still in the army, he became an

undercover agent whose job was to root out Marxists. Then he was given the job of lecturing. An Army report on Hitler referred to him as "a born orator."

 Hitler was sent to investigate this

group in Munich. He was given their booklet which reflected political thinking much like his own. In this disorganized party, Hitler saw opportunity. He joined the committee of German Workers Party.

 He took charge of the party

propaganda in early 1920 Changed the partys name to National Socialist German Workers' Party, called for short NAZI.

It consisted on 25 points, some are: Rejection of treaty of Versailles. Citizenship determined by race, with no Jews as Germans. Also , Hitler chose the Swastika symbol to represent this new movement. July 29, 1921, Adolf Hitler was introduced as Fhrer of the Nazi Party.

 Hitler was charged with high treason for leading 3000 Nazis to the center of Munich. During his trial he spoke about the NAZI platform which appealed to Germans. He served 9 months in jail out of 5 years, where he wrote his book Mein Kampf (my struggle)

 Hitler started a campaign in 1930

where he promised restoration of German glory. On September 14th 1930, elections took place. Then in 1933, 1936 and 1938

 Hitler was chosen the new

Chancellor of Germany. He dissolved the Reichstag and called for new elections where Nazi won 44% On March 23rd 1933 a bill was passed which effectively voted Democracy out of existence and established legal dictatorship of Adolf Hitler.
