HOW IT WORKS
Students take a STAR Test at the beginning of the year that helps determne their reading level. Teachers and students set goals for their reading. Students use a reading log to record the books they are reading. Almost all books in the library ar AR books. This gives the students a large variety to choose from. They are not limited to AR books and levels. Students will need to discuss these options with their reading teacher. Students take a test on the book they have read.
HOW IT WORKS
Students levels change as teachers monitor their progress. STAR Tests are taken each nine weeks to help monitor progress. You can check your childs progress by using the AR Connect. This is found on the Media Center Website under Accelerated Reading. You will need to know your childs username and password.
ACCESS TO BOOKS
Your library should have a flexible schedule which allows student to check out another book as soon as they finish one. The more access students have to good books, the more they will be motivated to read.
AR AS A MOTIVATOR
The Media Committee has developed an AR Reward for each nine week period for students meeting their AR Goal. Events planned include Dress up like your favorite book character Read In with popcorn and drink Movie and Popcorn Ice Cream Social
AR AS A MOTIVATOR
To help with the WES School Action plan to increase our Level 3 percentage on the CRCT to 30%, we also have planned an end of the year reward for the Top Ten grade level winners in 1 st 5 th grade. This year the students will attend the Strike Zone in Brunswick on May 10 th .
ZPD
The key to the increased growth in reading comprehension is maximizing the amount of reading practice a student performs within his Zone of Proximal Development
ZPD is the zone in which the student is both challenged and presented new vocabulary, but also in which there are enough context clues that the child can construct meaning without being frustrated.
