AN OVERVIEW OF THE HOLY MASS

The Church, being the community of believers and followers of Christ has always been obedient to His command of celebrating the Paschal meal in memory of His sacrifice. Throughout the ages everyday, most especially, every Sunday, Christians gathered to celebrate the Holy Eucharist. In the practice of the Church since the Resurrection and in official Church teachings, The Eucharist (Mass) is the MOST important form of Christian Worship, It is a ritual celebration centered on the saving mystery of Christ and it is celebrated by the Church in accord with His command and example.

THE TWO LITURGIES OF THE HOLY MASS

The Liturgy of the Word
The Scripture is proclaimed and meditated upon

The Liturgy of the Eucharist

We remember and make present the Paschal sacrifice of Christ in the ritual meal He instituted in the supper before He suffered on the Cross.

THE TWO LITURGIES OF THE HOLY MASS

Both Liturgies are pointed out to Christ.

Liturgy of the Word

Christ is the eternal Word of God; The word made flesh and the same word that is proclaimed.

Liturgy of the Eucharist

Christ is sacramentally present in the Bread and Wine.

In both Liturgies we encounter Christ.

For where two or three come together in my name, there am I with them-Mt 18:20
Whenever we gather to worship in the Holy Mass, Christ is present because as His Church we are members of His mystical body. Christ is also present in the person of the priests who presides over the assembly. The celebration begins w/ the gathering of the community ritualize in the INTRODUCTORY RITES and ends with the blessing and the dismissal of the assembly in the CONCLUDING RITE.

In Mass: We commemorate the Passion, Death & Resurrection of Christ and we do this by celebrating the ritual meal He instituted.

The Mass is both a SACRIFICE and a MEAL.

The Mass is also a wedding feast because during the Mass, we celebrate the marriage of Christ through His church which happened on the Cross. The Eucharist is the source and summit of the Christian life The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical
ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.
