Welding

1. Welding

Types of welding processes

Ø

Gas Welding

Ø

Arc Welding---TIG, MIG, SAW

Why Submerged Arc Welding?

  • 1. It provides higher metal deposition rate and allow to join higher thickness plates

  • 2. It provides flux shield that prevents weld metal from atmospheric contamination

  • 3. High arc efficiency about 95-97%

  • 4. Spatter losses are minimum as arc is covered under blanket of flux.

Need for designing of manufacturing process- Welding

Major disaster happened due to improper designing of joints are –

Ø Alexander Kielland platform—123 people died

Ø Ship failure without warning during second world war

Reasons--- Change of failure mode from ductile to brittle

Crack growth and fatigue failure

In order to avoid happening of such disasters,

designing of such processes and structures
