Guided drawing experiences are an important part of our curriculum. The drawings are not done for the children even when they say I cant. Staff guide the children by helping them to notice shape, lines and features. We do not provide stencils -they can do it, just let them!

Table play

The children quickly become competent and confident in representing what they see using a variety of media.

Working together on a group project, bringing in sand, sifting sand, adding shells and sea creatures. Some children went off to make a cave for the Rock Cray and others went to make lighthouses. At this stage we had created a beach.

But one day the beach changed to the ocean floor!

Thomas was explaining to Sam that the sand is the ocean floor so the boats needed to be above the sand in the water, We discussed this at group time and decided to use a tarpaulin as the water.

A mother brought in her diving equipment for the children to look at and the children began constructing their own equipment to use in our sea.

Air tanks

Underwater camera

Working together What do we need? What can we use? A water trough with sand, water, boats, light house, shells, rocks and people.

Building light houses

Children can use a variety of media to construct interpretations of their experiences.

These children are using a reference book on lighthouses and continually refer to the pictures as they build their own lighthouse with blocks.

Relaxing at the beach

Literacy experiences Shadow puppets

Using shadow puppets to tell The Rainbow Fish story.

These boys are re-telling the story Of The Smallest Turtle

This mum is reading The Smallest Turtle while her daughter and a friend use the shadow puppets to illustrate the story.

We learned about the sea turtle through a story, newspaper articles and reference books. These children are using clay to make representations of a turtle.

We cooked a whole fish and the children watched as I took the flesh off to expose the bones. They were then able to taste the fish!

Building displays and sharing the learning

Presenting our learning

Celebrating Chinese New Year

Children learn through their senses.

Sensory experiences provide a balance to the way children learn. They are learning how their body responds to different stimuli, through relaxation and enjoyment! The sheer pleasure of smells, textures, and taste.
