Introduction to leadership development program


A time- honored strategy for developing prospective, new and practicing leaders is to enroll them in leadership development programs. LDP typically focus on topics such as personal growth , strategy formulation, influence , motivation , persuacive communication and diversity management. Outdoor and wilderness training , is one important type of leadership training. The LDP has to be appropriately sponsored , carefully designed and professionally executed.

Types of leadership development programs


Feedback intensive program: helps leaders develop by seeing more clearly their patterns of behavior. The reasons for such behavior and the impact of these behaviors and attitudes on their effectiveness. Three key elements. Assessment. Challenge. Support. Skill- based program skill training in leadership development involves acquiring abilities and techniques that can be converted into action.
Methods : lecture, case study , role play , behavioral role modeling and simulations.

Conceptual knowledge programs : the concepts are typically supplemented by experiential activities such as role playing and cases. Personal growth programs: LDPs that focus on personal growth assume that leaders are deeply in touch with their personal dreams and talents and that they will act to fulfill that. Socialization program: A type of LDP emphasizes becoming socialized- becoming acclimated to the company and acceping its vision and values.

Action learning program: A practical approach to leadership development is for leaders and potential leaders to work together in groups to solve organizational problems outside their usual sphere of influence. Coaching and psychotherapy: Executive coaching is a form of leadership development because the managers coached receive advice and encouragement in relation to their leadership skills. Another way of enhancing leadership effectiveness is to undergo treatment for emotional problems that could be blocking leadership effectiveness.

Evaluation of leadership development efforts


The evaluation of training and development programs is a comprehensive topic that includes such considerations as the design of experiments and the development of accurate outcome measures.

Types of approach. The traditional approach to evaluation : of leadership training and development programs would first specify the program objectives. Usually there would be two sets of outcomes ,
First an assessment is made of the extent to which the participants acquired new skills during the program. Second an assessment is made of whether the organization has become more effective as a result of this new skill acquisition

Intra personal skills : being effective with yourself , such as having good self awareness. Interpersonal skills : dealing effectively with others. Leadership skills : influencing , inspiring and persuading others as well as visioning. Business skills : cognitive skills such as planning , budgeting , forecasting , cost cutting , running meetings and preparing reports.
