words are preceded by the and a. the and a are called noun markers or articles. They signal nouns. The, a, and an are the most commonly used noun markers.

In the sentences where the words run and light are used as noun, notice that the

A and an are called indefinite noun markers because they refer to anything, anyone, anywhere. They are used only with singular count nouns.

a is used before a word that starts with a consonant while an is used before a word

The, on the other hand, is called a definite noun marker because it refers to a specific person, place, or thing. It is used with nouns that are clearly identified.

It is also used with superlatives in making identity of nouns clear.
