MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM

Management information system refers to the data, equipment and computer programs that are used to develop information for managerial use. Five different types of MIS that serves the need of different managers are in an organization are Transaction Processing Office Automation Management Information Decision Support Executive Support

CASE STUDY
MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEM IN RESTAURANTS Features of MIS are 1. Input 2. Processing 3. Output 4. Users

A waiter takes an order at a table, and then enters it online via one of the six terminals located in the restaurant dining room. The order is routed to a printer in the appropriate preparation area: the cold item printer if it is a salad, the hot-item printer if it is a hot sandwich or the bar

printer if it is a drink. A customer bills the items ordered and the respective prices are automatically generated. When the kitchen runs out of a food item, the cooks send out an out of stock message, which will be displayed on the dining room terminals when waiters try to order that item. This gives the waiters faster feedback, , enabling them to give better service to the customers. The system provides up-to-the-minute information on the food items ordered and breaks out percentages showing sales of each item versus total sales. This helps management plan menus according to customers tastes. The system also compares the weekly sales totals versus food costs, allowing planning for tighter cost controls. In addition, whenever an order is voided, the reasons for the void are keyed in.

ADAVANTAGES
Eliminates carbon copies
Waiters handwriting issues Out-of-stock message

Faster feedback, helps waiters to service the customers

Sales figures and percentages item-wise Helps in planning the menu Cost accounting details

TRANSACTION PROCESSING SYSTEM (TPS)

TPS are those processing system which process day to day transaction of an organization to carry on its business operations TPS may support the following types of activities Payroll processing Sales and order processing Inventory management Account payable Account receivable

CASE STUDY
Spanlink and Hennepin County Hennepin County, Minnesota provides hundreds of services to its more than one million residents in Minneapolis and 45 surrounding cities. One such service is a voice response system that provides emergency cash assistance. The service is an important social program helping thousands of residents that are in crisis. The ability to automate many of the processes involved in the program helps the county to serve more people in less time, and at less expense.

CHALLENGES
Hennepin County was replacing their Integrated Voice Response (IVR)

system. As a part of this effort, they desired a new case management application. Hennepin County needed the ability to have their clients validate a case number and then get information on any monetary disbursements made for the case number. To solve this problem, they turned to a Cisco Interactive Voice Response system. Cisco asked Spanlink, a leading provider of integrated IP Communications solutions based on Cisco Systems' AVVID architecture, to subcontract all host connectivity for the application.

SOLUTION
Spanlink was familiar with Cleo software from previous engagements and therefore included Cleo in the evaluation and they trusted the Cleo software to be reliable and efficient. Spanlink examined Cleo's Transaction Processing Suite of software and was convinced that this approach was the answer.

The tools provided in the suite allowed Spanlink to quickly and accurately develop the interaction between the mainframe system and the Cisco IVR system. The IVR application written by Spanlink uses custom Java code and Cleo's Java API to pass caller input, run the transactions and retrieve the output from the host screens. Using the Transaction Processor Java Interface, Spanlink could control additional processing as well as determine which lines of data to retrieve. The power of Cleo's Transaction Designer allowed them to reduce development time from approximately 120 hours to 40 hours.

Cleo Communications helps companies of all sizes connect with and utilize mainframe data and applications. To discuss the benefits of Transaction Processing for any application or project.

THE SOLUTION AT WORK

By developing the software the company was able to

save 25% to 30% of the normal development time for the connectivity portion of the application The Transaction Designer was a lot simpler to use than other methods. By building transactions, development time was reduced because the program didn't have to call screen by screen to the host.
