Kenaikan tekanan darah haruslah dikonfirmasi pada 3 kali kesempatan yang
berbeda, kecuali apabila pasien mengalami hipertensi yang parah dan/atau
simtomatik. Kadang-kadang pasien menunjukkan peningkatan tekanan darah (>
persentil 95) yang menetap dikamar praktek, tetapi tekanan darah menjadi normal
(< persentil 95) apabila pasien berada dirumah atau dilingkungan sehari-hari.
Keadaan demikian disebut sebagai "white coat hypertension". Pada keadaan
tersebut pemantauan dengan ambulatory blood pressure monitor 24 jam
merupakan cara terbaik untuk menegakkan diagnosis. Signifikansi white coat
hypertension pada anak masih memerlukan penelaahan lebih mendalam, tetapi
risiko terjadinya penyakit kardiovaskuler lebih rendah dibandingkan true
hypertension pada dewasa.
