Virus ukurannya sangat kecil dan dapat melalui saringan (filter) bakteri.
Ukuran virus umumnya 0,01-0,1 . Virus tidak dapat diendapkan dengan
sentrifugasi biasa. Untuk melihat virus diperlukan mikroskop elektron.
Sifat-sifat virus yang penting antara lain:
1. Virus hanya mempunyai 1 macam asam nuklein (RNA atau DNA)
2. Untuk reproduksinya hanya memerlukan asam nuklein saja.
3. Virus tidak dapat tumbuh atau membelah diri seperti mikrobia
lainnya
Virus memiliki sifat-sifat khas dan tidak merupakan jasad yang dapat
berdiri sendiri.
Virus memperbanyak diri dalam sel jasad inang (parasit obligat) dan
menyebabkan sel-sel itu mati.
Sel inang adalah sel manusia, hewan, tumbuhan, atau pada jasad renik
yang lain.
Sel jasad yang ditumpangi virus dan mati itu akan mempengaruhi sel-sel
sehat yang ada didekatnya, dan karenanya dapat mengganggu seluruh
kompleks sel (bercak-bercak daun, bercak-bercak nekrotik dan
sebagainya.

VIRUS TUMBUHAN
Virus tumbuhan pada umumnya masuk ke dalam sel melalui
luka, jadi tidak dapat menerobos secara aktif.
Di alam virus tumbuhan disebarkan dengan pertolongan
hewan serangga vektor atau dengan cara lain, misalnya
tanaman Cuscuta dengan haustorianya juga memindahkan
virus melalui sistem jaringan angkutannya (buluh-buluh
pengangkutan).
Banyak jenis virus yang memperbanyak diri terlebih dahulu di
dalam tractus digestivus hewan-hewan vektornya.
Setelah
masa inkubasi
tertentu
dapat
menyebabkan infeksi pada tumbuh-tumbuhan lagi. Virus
semacam itu dikenal sebagai virus yang persisten.
Virus tumbuhan yang telah banyak dipelajari adalah TMV
(Tobacco Mozaic)
Virus = Virus Mozaik Tembakau). Bahan genetik virus ini ialah
RNA.

BENTUK VIRUS
Suatu virion terdiri atas bahan genetik (RNA atau DNA) yang
diselubungi oleh selubung protein.
Selubung protein ini disebut kapsid.
Asam nuklein yang diselubungi kapsid disebut nukleokapsid.
Nukleokapsid dapat telanjang misalnya pada TMV (Tobacco
Mozaik
Virus yang menyebabkan penyakit bercak daun),
Adenovirus dan virus kutil (Warzervirus); atau diselubungi
oleh suatu membran pembungkus misalnya pada virus
influenza, virus herpes.
BENTUK VIRUS
Kapsid terdiri atas bagian-bagian yang disebut kapsomer
(misalnya pada TMV dapat terdiri atas hanya satu rantaian
polipeptida, juga dapat terdiri atas protein monomer-protein
monomer yang identik yang masing-masing terdiri atas
rantaian polipeptida).
Pada dasarnya kapsid terdiri atas banyak satuan-satuan dasar
yang identik. Pada umumnya kapsid tersusun simetris.
Pada TMV (suatu virus yang berbentuk batang) kapsomernya
tersusun dalam bentuk anak tangga uliran spiral.
Bentuk dasar virus adalah yang bulat, silindris, kubus,
polihedral, seperti huruf T, dan lain-lain.
