Survey elektromagnetik untuk mendeteksi aliran limbah dan untuk memetakan distribusi spasial

2endahuluan
Tempat pembuangan sampah berpotensi sebagai sumber pencemaran lingkungan.
Landfill facilities are potential sources of environmental contamination. The technical and scientific
literature is full of examples dealing with pollution originated in landfills (see, e.g., Benson et al., 1!" #gilv$ et
al., 1" Aristodemou and Thomas%Betts, &'''" (ota et al., &'')*. +suall$ the landfill site investigation is aimed at
detecting and determining the extension of the polluted area and for that purpose, several researchers have used
resistivit$ and,or electromagnetic geoph$sical methods. These studies are possible because both organic and
inorganic chemicals can cause a large variation (usuall$ a decrease* in the electrical resistivit$ of the earth material
(-alack$, 1.." Aristodemou and Thomas%Betts, &'''*. The decrease in resistivit$ is caused b$ the increase in
dissolved ions in the rock/s pore fluid and can be used to monitor the spread of contamination in soil and
groundwater.
(an$ different electromagnetic methods are currentl$ used in conductivit$ measurements. The 0L1%2(
(0er$ Low 1re3uenc$ band* method is one of the most used techni3ues to assess subsurface structures. 4n this
method, onl$ the components of the ellipticall$ polari5ed magnetic field are measured. (easuring one hori5ontal
magnetic and one hori5ontal electric component of the 0L1 field a new categor$ of the 0L1 method, is used6 the
0L1%7 (Tabbagh et al., 11" 8harma and 9aikkonen, 1." #skooi and -edersen, &'':*. Turberg et al. (1)* and
8tiefelhagen and (;ller (1!* introduced the radiofre3uenc$ electromagnetic method (71%2(* based <ust on the
magnetic field measuring. Bosh and (;ller (&''1* introduced the radiofre3uenc$ resistivit$ (71%7*, also called
radio magnetotelluric (7(T* method, measuring both the electric and magnetic fields. These methods work in the
fre3uenc$ range of 1&='' k>5 and can be considered as advanced versions of a multi%fre3uenc$ 0L1%7 method
that have better resolution capabilities (-edersen et al., &'':" #skooi and -edersen, &'':*. The 0L1%2( method
uses radio signals in the bandwidths of 1' =' k>5 and is a powerful tool for 3uick reconnaissance of near surface
structures. Because of the eas$ operation of the instrument, speed of field surve$, and low operation cost, this
method is ver$ suitable for rapid preliminar$ surve$s and has been widel$ used in man$ geoph$sical studies since
the 1?'s (Bernard and 0alla, 11" (c@eill and Labson, 11" Tabbagh et al., 11" Benson et al., 1!" and,
more recentl$, 8harma and Baranwal, &'':*.
4n this stud$ the 0L1%2( method was used to investigate the dispersion of pollution in the vicinit$ of a
recentl$ installed (? $ears* landfill facilit$. The main ob<ectives of the stud$ were6 (a* detection of connected
fracturing in the cr$stalline basement and, (b* evaluation of the extension and possible paths of the contamination
caused b$ landfill leachate.
