Background: Everyone is expected to have a good physical fitness in order to do
their daily activities, including students. Physical fitness can be assessed by
measuring the value of maximal oxygen consumption. Maximal oxygen consumption
is influenced by several factors, smoking is one of them. The purpose of this study is
to compare the value of maximal oxygen consumption in smokers and non-smokers
law students of Mataram University.
Method: This study was an observational analitic study with cross sectional
approach. The subjects were 48 law students of Mataram University which consist of
24 smokers and 24 non-smokers selected by consecutive sampling. The value of
VO2max was measured with Queen College Step Test. Data analysis was performed
using unpaired t test.
Results: Data analysis showed that the mean value of VO2max in the smoker group was
49.52ml/kg/minutes, while the value in the non-smoker group was
62.24ml/kg/minutes. The comparative study result on the effect of smoking on
VO2maxvalue was p<0,05.
Conclusion: The mean value of VO2max in smoker students was lower than nonsmoker students. There was a significant difference of VO 2max value between smoker
and nonsmoker law students of Mataram University (p<0.05).
Key words: maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max), smoking, physical fitness.
