Read the passage below and complete the tasks that follow.

Mobile phones do not use wires. They work like a radio. Radios do not use wires but we can still
hear sounds coming from the radio station far away from us. Thats because the sounds are
travelling through air on radio waves.

Therefore, a mobile phone is actually a radio. It sends and receives signals by radio waves
However; mobile phones do not have strong transmitters. They cannot send signals very far. So, a
cellular system makes talking with people from afar possible. Telephone companies divide a big
area into many smaller areas called cells.

Every cell has a base station with a tower and radio equipment. I he tower connects mobile phones
in the cell to the main office that controls all other base stations. That is how people in different
"cells" can talk to each other. This cellular system is also why mobile phones are also called cell
phones.
