ABSTRACT
Formulation of lipstick using natural dyes ethanol extract carotenoids from
carrot (Daucus carota L) is potential to be used as an alternative natural dyes.
Possible use of castor oil can effect physical characteristic, especially in texture of
lipstick. The aim of this research is to find out the effect of concentration variation
of castor oil againts physical characteristic of lipstick, hedonic test of the best formula
and safety formulation of lipstick based open patch test. The castor oil addition as oil base
with concentratioon of 50%, 60%, and 70%. The physical characteristic of lipstick
avaolability was analyzed descriptively and analiticly. Open patch test was analyzed by
skin response are described on the formula examination and are interpreted according to
criteria estabilished by International Contact Dermatitis Research Group. The
quantitative data with calculation according to ratio woman who is suffer irritation/
allergy and total in woman inclusion. The results showed that the all lipsticks were
enough stable, homogeneous, and breaking point was 70-110 gram. Melting point of the
lipstick contained variation concentration of castor oil 50%, 60%, 70% were 56; 55;
53,5oC and the pH tests were 4,4 ;4,7; 5,2. The best formulation was found in formula I
with pH test was 4,4, the lipstick preparations were easy applied , and the melting point
was 56oC. The hedonic test had a good respon from panelist esspecially in colour and
textures. The lipstick did not cause irritation so it is safe to use.
