The Correlation Between Patient Safety Culture and Reporting of Patient Safety Incidents by Nurses in The Inpatient Room of A Hospital
Abstrak
The patient safety culture and reporting of patient safety incidents is an important factor in
reducing patient safety events in hospitals. There are several factors that may inhibit the reporting
of patient safety events, among others: the punishment for individuals who experience errors, poor
safety culture, lack of understanding among the clinicians about the incidents that need to be
reported and how the incident report can benefit the improvement of the service system. This
problem can be solved by implementing adequate patient safety culture. The objective of the
research was to identify the correlation between patient safety culture and reporting of patient
safety incidents by nurses in the inpatient room of a hospital. It is a correlation research design
with cross sectional approach. The samples were 112 nurses, taken by using simple random
sampling. The data were collected using Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPSC)
from Agancy Hospital Quality Research (AHQR) and questionnaire developed by the researcher
concerning the reporting of patient safety incidents by the nurse. Spearman correlation testing was
employed for the statistical test. The results of this study indicate a significant relationship
between patient safety culture and reporting of patient safety incidents by nurses in the inpatient
room of the hospital (r = .273, p = .000). The results of this study also obtained a correlation
between each dimension of the patient safety culture and the reporting of patient safety incidents
by the nurses, i.e. supervisor/manager expectation and action promoting safety (r = .735, p = .000),
organizational learning - continuous improvement (r = .465, p = .000), teamwork within units (r = .
223, p = .013), communication openness (r = .119, p = .212), feedback and communication about
error (r = 0.197, p = .037), non-punitive response to error (r = -.110, p = .250), and staffing (r = .
290, p = .002). Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that a good patient safety
culture will improve the reporting of patient safety incidents by nurses. The results of this study
are expected to be information for the hospital to further improve the patient safety culture and
reporting of patient safety incidents so as to improve the quality of health services to patients in the
hospital.
