MOTHER'S MOTIVATION OF BREASTFEEDING IN BANTUL,
YOGYAKARTA
Reni Merta Kusuma, Ristiana Ariningtyas
ASI (Air Susu Ibu. Mother's Milk) is very important and necessary for children’s health and
growth. Basic Health Research in 2012 noted that the scope of exclusive breastfeeding in
Indonesia was just 42% This result did not achieved the World Health Organisation (WHO)'s
target. that 5026 of women who give birth 10 the living infants could have breastfed their
‘abies. The Indonesian Government, through the Ministry of Health, is ariempiing 10 make
mothers able 10 breastfeed their babies. Data in Yogyakarta from 2008 10 2012 showed that the
scope of exclusive breastfeeding has relatively increased from 39.99% 1 48%. The scope of
exclusive breastfeeding needs 10 be maintained ard! improved 1 be more than 3036. with the
‘implication that the babies receive their right, namely the healthy tmake in the form of ASI. The
success of @ mother's breastfeeding is influenced by several factors among which are the mother’s
knowledge about the content and usefulness of ASI for infanis and her motivation for giving AS! as
the best food for her baby. The results of the study which has been done in the area of Bantul show
‘that the analysis of the correlation beeen knowledge and motivation has resulted ina value of +
0.149 and p ~ 0.034. It means that there is a significant correlation between mother's
dnovledge about breastfeeding and mother's motivation to breastfeed. The conclusion of this study
48 that there 48 a significant relationship between mother's knowledge about breastfeeding and
‘mother's motivation tobreastfeed.
Keywords: Breastfeeding Knowledge, Motivation to Breastfced
1, INTRODUCTION
ASI (Air Susu Thu, Mother's Milk) is necessary for children’s health and growth
Breastfeeding or giving of ASI has many benefits for mother and her baby, ASI isthe best food @
baby needs WHO (World Health Organization) has recommended breastfeeding to infants
because the Golden Standard Feeding starts from Insiasi Menyusu Dini (IMD, Early Initiation of|
Breastfeeding), six months of exclusive ASI, the giving of Makanan Pendamping ASI (MP-ASI,
ASI Complementary Food) afer the baby comes to 6 month old age, while still breastfeeding the
baby until he’she would come 2 year age or older (WHO, 20 14). Those series of measures are the
bass for filling the needs of infants and toddlers "*
‘WHO targets the coverage of exclusive ASI by 50%, but the fact shows that Indonesia just
reached 42% (Basic Health Research, 2013) ** Exclusive ASI for a baby needs a strong motivation
from within the nursing mother herself and a support of the people around her, What should be
prepared by the breastfeeding or nusring mother in order to have a strong motivation to breastfeed
her baby until she/he would reach 2 year old age, is true knowledge related to breastfeeding, The
ability of a mother to breastfeed her child is influenced by the knowledge related to breastfeeding,
‘among which isthe knowledege about the importance of ASI. The mother should know that ASI is
very useful forthe baby, that the baby needs ASI, dan that the baby would receive antibodies by
receiving the ASI This is similar with the resul of Widiyanto’s research (2012), that there is
strong relationship between knowledge and attitude ofthe nursing mother in giving the exclusive
ASI?
The failure of exclusive ASI coverage to reach the target was caused by many factors,
Intrinsic and extrinsic, related to the nursing mother, The study carried out by Racin etal. (2011)
shows thatthe experience of breastfeeding either of the nursing mother herself or ofthe others
could influence the nursing mother’s motivation to give ASI,” Its also confirmed by the result of
Hiaku's research (2007), which shows that the giving of ASI is stopped when the baby came to |
‘month old age.*
Intrinsic motivation is a motivation that makes a person active or becomes functional without
‘any stimulation from outside because there s an urge to do something in his or her own self
Intrinsic motivation of a nursing mother is very important to grow, and once this motivation exists,
itis necessary to maintain it so thatthe baby would receive his or her right to nutrition intake, The
influential intrinsic factor isthe provision of information and knowledge of breastfeeding *”
287258
Extrinsic motivation is a motivation that makes a person active or has a will to do something.
‘because ofa stimulation from outside. Extemal motivation may come from family and community
support, the monitoring midwives, and breastfeeding support community. A nursing mother may
pot have a will 1 give her baby exclusive ASI if she has no true understanding that exclusive AS]
's very useful for her and her baby, notably forthe baby’s growth and development"
‘The place of doing this research was Bantul, Yogvakarta Bantul was one of the regencies
Which had the highest ASI coverage in Yogvakana This achievement was supported by
the existence of Kelompok Pendukung ASI (KP-ASI. Breastfeeding Support Group). The
Support group came from Bantul Health Office The existence of KP-ASI was very helpful and
supportive for nursing mothers to continue their giving their babies exclusive ASI until they came
2 year old age
‘Based on those described above, this study examines the nursing mothers’ knowledge about
ASI content and their motivation o breastfeed their baby inBantul Regency, Yogyakarta
2, RESEARCH METHODS,
‘The design ofthis study is a retrospective research with cross-cectional approach and survey’
‘method to examine the relationship between mother's knowledge about ASI and her motivation 10
breastfeed their babies. Research was conducied in several villages in Bantul, The villages are
Guwosari, Bangunjiwo, and Pleret. The research was conducted from July to August 2015
Source of data came from respondents consisting the nursing mothers who had infaats of 6-12
‘month age and still gave ASI up to the time of data collection. This provision was used beceuse
there were found in society mothers who, instead of the fact that they were in a breasfeeding,
period, didnot give ASI to their baby and chose to give formula milk to their babies.
Tae proses of data collection was done by asking the respondents to fill questionnaires. The
collected data, then, were verified andanalysed.
Population inthis research were all nursing mothers in Bantul Regency, the number of which
were 2176, The sample were nursing mothers who had baby with the age of 6-12 months. Sample
used in this research were 202 nursing mothers who had babies with the age of 6-12 months, and
still pve ASI when the data were collected. The sample were taken randomly from each area in
Bantul, Yogyakarta. Technique of taking sample was carried on by cluster random sampling.
‘The analysis was in accordance with the purpose of this study, ie. 10 seek an intervariables
relationship (between mother’s knowledge of ASI and mother’s motivation to give ASI to her
baby) and a description of the respondents" characteristics. Test of analysis used was analysis of
{description and Pearson's analysis of correlation

B. Discussion
Respondents of 21-30 year old were prominent inthis study, 609% The range of 21-30 year
‘ld belonged to the category of producave period for woman. In this period woman was
Productive to work This was also a period in which it was righ for woman to. have
healthy reproduction. ffom pregnancy, giving bith, portutton, and became an acceptor of
certain KB (Keluarsa Berencana Family Plannng) (DIY Health Office, 2013)"
Respondents inthis study. could be viewed as belonged 10 good category because the
Aistribution of respondents of 15-20 year old (1%) and those of above 40 vear old ($8) had
precentages which were smaller than other groups of ages range. Ages which were too young or
too old were not fit o be included inthe reproduction period. This was. more related to physical
ability of a mother Physical ability’ in reproduction period was related tothe ability of woman's
Iuscles to pass through the pregnancy pesod which would be followed by giving bith and
Porturtion. Poruntion would be followed by breastfeeding period, which beyan atthe child birth
to next several months These could be categorized as a heavy period, because beside the mother
‘would experienced hormonal adaptation and physical and psychological changes inher own sl,
she also ought to care for, her baby's needs. It underlined thatthe range of 21-30 year old was an
‘ideal period for a woman *2
