KONSEP-KONSEP DASAR
Katalis berfungsi untuk meningkatkan laju kecepatan reaksi pada suatu reaksi kimia
Peran katalis dalam reaksi yaitu menurunkan energi aktivasi (Ea) sehingga reaktan
bereaksi membutuhkan energi atau hambatan yang lebih kecil dibandingkan jika reaksi
kimia tidak menggunakan katalis.
Energi aktivasi (Ea) adalah energi minimum yang dibutuhkan oleh reaktan untuk bereaksi
menjadi produk
Atau Energi aktivasi biasa juga didefenisikan sebagai energi minimum yang dibutuhkan
oleh molekul untuk bertumbukan untuk bereaksi.

Reaksi kimia yang menggunakan katalis memerlukan energi aktivasi yang kecil sehingga
akan meningkatkan laju reaksi kimia pada suhu yang sama pada saat reaksi tidak
menggunakan katalis pada reaksi.
Apabila energi kinetik partikel dalam suatu reaksi tidak melampaui energi aktivasinya,
maka reaksi tidak akan terjadi.
Reaksi kimia menggunakan katalis dapat berlansung pada suhu dan tekanan yang lebih
rendah dibandingkan jika tidak melibatkan katalis dalam reaksi.
Katalis setelah reaksi tidak mengalami perubahan secara kimiawi atau dapat dipisahkan
dengan produk tanpa ada perubahan.

• Katalis yang dibutuhkan dalam suatu reaksi memiliki jumlah yang optimum yakni jumlah yang
Menghasilkan produk yang maksimum.
• Umumnya katalis hanya berjumlah sedikit saja dalam suatu reaksi, misalkan dibutuhkan
katalis berkisar 1-5 % dari jumlah reaktan yang terbatas (limiting reactant)
• Katalis memiliki tingkat selektivitas terhadap produk tertentu jika terdapat lebih dari satu jenis
produk atau katalis hanya efektif pada reaksi tertentu

Adsorpsi Nitrogen pada titik didihnya (77 K) adalah teknik karakterisasi yang biasa
digunakan untuk menentukan luas permukaan, serta ukuran, distribusi dan/atau bentuk
pori.
Gas yang diadsorp disebut adsorbat dan padatan dimana adsorpsi terjadi disebut adsorben.
Saat padatan dikenai Nitrogen, gaya Van der Waals akan bekerja di antara permukaan
padatan dengan molekul gas.
Physisorption gas ini adalah fenomena yang reversibel karena lemahnya ikatan antara
molekul gas dan permukaan padatan. Sampel katalis ditempatkan dalam sel dan di-outgas
pada kondisi vakum suhu 120ºC.
Analisa dilakukan pada suhu kriogenik N2 cair pada titik didihnya (77.35 K pada tekanan
atmosferis).
