mandiri.

After 1969, when the first computer network, ARPANET, was created to connect
U.S. Department of Defense contractors in computer science, the rate of adoption
was very slow, almost approaching a straight line. Finally, in the late 1980s,
ARPANET and many other existing computer networks merged to form the
Internet. The critical mass occurred about 1990. Then, aided by technological
advances such as browsers and by the addition of commercial applications of the
World Wide Web in the mid-1990s, the rate of adoption skyrocketed, until in 2002,
9 percent of the world’s population (544 million people) were Internet users.

In the mid-1990s, the U.S. government permitted the Internet to be used for business purposes. The
Internet is utilized for marketing and for buying, and has facilitated the globalization of world business
(Singhal and Rogers, 2001). The first product sold in large quantities through the Internet was books, and
Amazon.com and other e-commerce businesses have changed the nature of commerce through credit card
purchases and overnight delivery. Now e-mail connects you both to the person in the neighboring office
and to a virtual employee or friend who may be on the opposite side of the world.
By 2002, there were 313 billion Web pages on 37 million Web sites on the World Wide Web, with 68
percent of this material in English (Kwon, 2002). This vast and rapidly increasing information resource
added to the perceived value of the Internet, thus boosting the rate of adoption of computer networking.
The Internet has created increased interest in the study of diffusion, and particularly in the role of
communication networks in the diffusion process. In the pre-Internet era, interpersonal networks were
ethereal and thus difficult to understand. Now people communicate over hard wires that link computers,
which capture a record of human message exchange and thus can illuminate the nature of networks
(Rogers, 1987). Each individual participant in a network knows who he or she is connected to but seldom
knows to whom these individuals are linked. As a top official at Hewlett-Packard stated, “We don’t know
what we know, or, often, who knows it.” Computer network analyses can aid such understanding, by
showing individuals in a system the total network structure of their system.
