The purpose of this study is to find out how the most common form of
self-harm of a female individual who experienced violence by the biological
father and to find out what are the premise behind the self-harm behavior that are
pulling one’s hair and biting one’s nails. Qualitative research method is used in
this case along with case study approach. A female whose self-harm behavior is
pulling one’s hair and biting one’s nails assigned as the only one subject in this
study. Data collection used in this research is observation, interviews, and
documentations. In this study, the researchers are using triangulation method,
which is also using interviews and observation method. Data analysis in this case
is using Marshall’s analysis technique which organizing data, theory and theme
based grouping, verifying problems with the collected data, finding out alternate
explanations of the data and commit to paper the result of this study. The results
showed that there were self-harm actions carried out by the subject due to a great
fear when the subject experienced physical violence by subject’s father when the
subject was small. This is done unconsciously by the subject to divert her fear and
then this action is often carried out by the subject into adulthood. The factor that
causes the subject to perform self-harm behavior is a psychological factor where
the subject needs to divert negative emotions within herself.
