A nuclear power plant or nuclear power station is a thermal power station in which the heat
source is a nuclear reactor. As is typical in all conventional thermal power stations the heat is used
to generate steam which drives a steam turbine connected to an electric generator which produces
electricity. As of 23 April 2014, the IAEA report there are 449 nuclear power reactors in operation
operating in 31 countries.
Nuclear power stations are usually considered to be base load stations since fuel is a small
part of the cost of production. Their operations and maintenance (O&M) and fuel costs are, along
with hydropower stations, at the low end of the spectrum and make them suitable as base-load
power suppliers. The cost of spent fuel management, however, is somewhat uncertain.
Electricity was generated by a nuclear reactor for the first time ever on September 3, 1948
at the X-10 Graphite Reactor in Oak Ridge, Tennessee in the United States, which was the first
nuclear power station to power a light bulb. The second, larger experiment occurred on December
20, 1951 at the EBR-I experimental station near Arco, Idaho in the United States. On June 27,
1954, the world's first nuclear power station to generate electricity for a power grid started
operations at the Soviet city of Obninsk. The world's first full scale power station, Calder Hall in
England, opened on October 17, 1956.The world's first full scale power station solely devoted to
electricity production (Calder Hall was also meant to produce plutonium), Shippingport power
plant in the United States, connected to the grid on December 18, 1957.
The conversion to electrical energy takes place indirectly, as in conventional thermal power
stations. The fission in a nuclear reactor heats the reactor coolant. The coolant may
be water or gas or even liquid metal depending on the type of reactor. The reactor coolant then
goes to a steam generator and heats water to produce steam. The pressurized steam is then
usually fed to a multi-stage steam turbine. After the steam turbine has expanded and partially
condensed the steam, the remaining vapour is condensed in a condenser. The condenser is a heat
exchanger which is connected to a secondary side such as a river or a cooling tower. The water is
then pumped back into the steam generator and the cycle begins again. The water-steam cycle
corresponds to the Rankine cycle.

A. To show how effective nuclear power plant in producing large amount of energy
B. To tell the history of nuclear power plant developed.
C. To explain the systems of how nuclear power plant works
D. To describe nuclear power plant
E. To show the cost management of nuclear power plant
82. What happen after the steam turbine condense the steam?
A. The reactor coolant goes to a steam generaor.
B. The reactor coolant heats water to produce steam.
C. The water is pumped back into the steam generator.
D. The remaining vapour is condensed in a condenser.
E. The condenser will condense the water.
Supergiants can have masses from 10 to 70 solar masses and brightness from 30,000 up
to hundreds of thousands times the solar luminosity. They vary greatly in radius, usually from 30
to 500, or even in excess of 1,000 solar radii. The Stefan-Boltzmann law dictates that the relatively
cool surfaces of red supergiants radiate much less energy per unit area than those of blue
supergiants; thus, for a given luminosity red supergiants are larger than their blue counterparts.
The most massive superstars in the Galaxy have surface temperatures of between 20,000 -
50,000°C and appear blue in colour. They are designated 'blue supergiants’ due to their
appearance and the enormous amounts of energy that they can radiate. The best known example
is Rigel, the brightest star in the constellation of Orion. It has a mass of around 20 times that of
the Sun and gives out more light than 60,000 suns added together.
Whereas, red supergiants are supergiant stars which are the largest stars in the universe in
terms of physical size. These stars have very cool surface temperatures (3,227- 4,227 degree
Celcius), and enormous radii. The four largest known red supergiants in the Galaxy are l\/lu
Cephei, KW Sagitarii, V354 Cephei, and KY Cygni, which all have radii about 1500 times that of the
sun (about 7 times as far as the. Earth is from the sun). The radius of most red giants is between
200 and 800 times that of the sun, which is still enough to reach from the sun to Earth and
beyond.

"The full magnitude of risks of ingesting micro-plastics are yet to be fully investigated," said Elitza
Germanov of Murdoch University, Australia, and researcher at the US Marine Megafauna Foundation.
Possible risks include reduced nutritional uptake and damage to the digestive system when micro-
plastics are ingested, she said.
The study argues that large filter feeders, many of which are "charismatic and economically
important species", should be prioritized for further research into risks from micro-plastics. Filter
feeders swallow hundreds of cubic meters of water a day to capture their food from water, and may
take in micro-plastics during the process. Micro-plastics are similar in size and mass to many types of
plankton. Studies have shown chemicals associated with plastics in the bodies of whale sharks and
fin whales. "Our studies on whale sharks in the Sea of Cortez and on fin whales in the Mediterranean
Sea confirmed exposure to toxic chemicals, indicating that these filter feeders are taking up micro-
plastics in their feeding grounds," said co-researcher Prof Maria Fossil of the University of Siena in
Italy. "Exposure to these plastic-associated toxins poses a major threat to the health of these
animals since it can alter the hormones, which regulate the body's growth and development,
metabolism, and reproductive functions, among other things."
Whale sharks feeding in the Sea of Cortez off Mexico's Baja Peninsula, which is an important
breeding ground, are estimated to ingest under 200 pieces of plastic per day. Fin whales in the
Mediterranean Sea are thought to be swallowing closer to 2,000 micro-plastic particles per day. The
researchers say there have been reports of 800kg of plastic found in the carcass of a stranded whale
in France and another in Australia contained six square meters of plastic sheeting as well as 30
whole plastic carrier bags. The report highlights several key coastal regions for research and
monitoring within the habitat ranges of the animals, including the Coral Triangle, the Gulf of Mexico,
the Mediterranean Sea, the Bay of Bengal and other areas that have high micro-plastic concentration
levels, such as the world's five oceanic gyres. Whale sharks and other flagship species may act as a
focal point for research, especially in countries that rely on wildlife tourism, say the researchers.
"It is worth highlighting that utilizing these iconic species, such as whale sharks, manta rays and
whales to gain the attention of and engage with communities, policy makers and managers will go
far to enhance stewardship of entire marine ecosystems," said Ms Germanov, who is a PhD student
at Murdoch University. A number of filter-feeding sharks, rays and whales are on the edge of
extinction. Many are long-lived and give birth to few offspring during their lives. The whale shark, for
example, is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Found in tropical and warm temperate
waters, it is the largest fish in the world, yet feeds on tiny plankton, crustaceans and small fish.
