1. Coping With Nancy
Nancy Calista is a Customer Service at the “Brilliant Consulting” Management Consulting
Firm. When Nancy started joining the company five years ago, Nancy impressed her
Manager and co-workers with her high discipline and excellent quality of work. But since
six months ago Nancy often fell asleep while working.
In several cases, Arga Arizona, Nancy's manager, discovered several errors that Nancy
had made in her filing and correspondence work. Some of these errors are very serious
and cause conflict between Brilliant Consulting and its clients. For example, Nancy called a
client late who needed information about the services provided by Brilliant Consulting.
Arga Arizona investigated this problem and found that Nancy was the cause.
Besides, Nancy's quality of work has greatly decreased and Nancy is also often absent
from work. For the past five weeks, Nancy has missed one day of work each week. When
her manager asked her, Nancy always had an excuse for waking up late so she decided to
stay at home, visit her sick grandmother, drive her friend to the airport and so on.
Arga Arizona doesn't know what to do with Nancy and he reports Nancy's problem to his
boss. The head of Arga Arizona suggested that he take a cut from Nancy's salary every
time Nancy was absent from work. But this still didn't improve Nancy's quality of work and
Nancy's discipline and Nancy still missed one day of work each week.
Arga Arizona is in a dilemma. If he does not immediately solve Nancy's problem, it will
greatly affect his supervisory abilities.
