A. Definition of Caption
Caption means brief text over or under a picture in a book, magazine, or newspaper that describes
the picture or explains what the people in it are doing or saying.

Caption adalah text singkat yang berada di atas atau di bawah sebuah gambar yang terdapat di
sebuah buku, majalah, atau surat kabar yang mendeskripsikan gambar tersebut atau menjelaskan
apa yang sedang dikerjakan atau sedang dikatakan oleh mereka.

In writing a caption, it is very important to choose words which can attract the reader’s attention to
see the content of an article, an essay, or a report. Therefore, the knowledge of copywriting is very
important, especially when dealing with social media.

Dalam menulis caption, sangat penting untuk memilih kata-kata yang dapat membuat pembacanya
memiliki ketertarikan untuk melihat konten artkel, esai atau laporan tersebut. Oleh sebab itu, ilmu
copywriting sangatlah penting terutama di media sosial.

Caption can be in two languages; the first one is using mother language (Indonesian) and the other
one using second language (mostly English). If seeing a picture without any texts describing it, it is
the same as the situation when you watch a movie without any sound. People cannot know the
message of the picture. Instead, they can just guess the message which the picture is trying to
convey.

Caption bisa juga datang dengan dua bahasa, satu bahasa ibu dan yang kedua menggunakan
bahasa kedua. Misalnya bahasa Indonesia dan bahasa Inggris. Jika melihat gambar tanpa
keterangan, rasanya mungkin seperti menonton sesuatu tanpa mendengarkan suaranya. Kita tidak
bisa mengetahui apa yang ingin disampaikan oleh gambar tersebut, jadi kita hanya bisa
menginterpretasikan sendiri arti dari gambar tersebut.

All captions, at least, have two sentences. The first one uses Present Tense in order to describe and
explain what is happening in the picture. The sentence can answer 5W questions dealing with the
picture (what, when, where, why, and who)

Translation
Semua caption text setidaknya memiliki dua kalimat. Kalimat pertama adalah present tense dan
menjelaskan apa yang terjadi pada gambar dengan menjawab sebanyak 5W (what, when, where,
why, dan who).

Meanwhile, the other sentence uses Past Tense which is used to describe the background and the
situation behind the picture. In this case, write as much information as needed and do not write
unclear information! The focus is to narrate and give updated and interesting information to the
reader.

Kalimat kedua adalah bentuk lampau atau past tense dan menggambarkan latar belakang atau
situasi yang ada di balik gambar. Selain itu tuliskan informasi sebanyak mungkin informasi dan
jangan tuliskan informasi yang tidak jelas. Fokusnya adalah pada bercerita dan memberikan
informasi baru dan menarik kepada pembaca.

B. Kinds of Caption
There are seven types of caption text, namely:
1. Identification
This caption is usually used to describe or identify everyone in the photo, but does not explain
a story. The focus on this type of identification text caption is on clarity.

Caption text jenis ini biasanya digunakan untuk menjelaskan atau mengidentifikasikan setiap
orang yang berada di dalam foto, namun tidak menjelaskan sebuah cerita. Fokus pada caption
text jenis identification ini ada pada kejelasan.

2. Group Identification
Group Captions are usually used to describe multiple images. This caption should have at least
two sentences per image and include a quote wherever possible. The group caption must be
clear about which image each caption describes.

Group Caption biasanya digunakan untuk menjelaskan banyak gambar. Keterangan ini harus
memiliki setidaknya dua kalimat per gambar dan menyertakan kutipan bila memungkinkan.
Group caption harus jelas tentang gambar mana yang dijelaskan setiap keterangan.

3. Story-Telling Caption
Story-telling captions are the ideal type of caption and can be used wherever possible. This
type of caption will be a story behind the image. Using this type of caption will usually be more
interesting to read.

Translation
Story-telling caption adalah jenis caption yang ideal dan bisa digunakan kapan saja jika
memungkinkan. Caption jenis ini akan menceritakan sebuah cerita dibalik gambar yang ada.
Dengan menggunakan caption jenis ini biasanya akan lebih menarik untuk dibaca.

4. Summary
For this type of caption summary, it usually contains an explanation of the object in the
picture, the activities carried out in the picture, the time of the incident, the location of the
incident and the reason why the activity was carried out.

Translation
Untuk jenis caption summary, biasanya berisi penjelasan subjek yang ada di gambar, kegiatan
yang dilakukan di dalam gambar tersebut, waktu kejadian, lokasi kejadian dan alasan
mengapa kegiatan tersebut dilakukan.
 5. Quotes
Quote caption contains a quote from someone in the picture. In the other word, it consists of
someone’s word which has been quoted related to the pictures or photos.

Translation
Quote caption berarti berisi kutipan kalimat dari seseorang yang ada di dalam gambar.

6. Cutline
Cutline type captions are the ones most often found in pictures and writings printed on
newspapers and media, both offline and online. The caption cutline describes the subject in
the image and what the subject is doing.

Translation
Caption jenis cutline adalah yang paling sering ditemukan dalam gambar dan tulisan yang
tertera pada koran dan media baik media offline ataupun online. Caption cutline menjelaskan
subjek yang ada di gambar dan apa yang sedang dilakukan oleh subjek.

7. Expanded
The type of expanded caption is the type of caption that has the most complete information. In
accordance with the name of the type, this expanded caption text is a development of the
previous text, especially from the summary caption.

Translation
Jenis caption expanded adalah jenis caption yang paling lengkap informasinya. Sesuai dengan
nama jenisnya, caption text yang diperluas ini adalah pengembangan dari teks sebelumnya,
terutama dari caption summary.

C. Language feature
Caption text is usually written in the form of Simple Present Tense.

Translation
Caption text dalam bahasa Inggris sebenarnya bisa ditulis menggunakan kalimat apa saja, tetapi
lebih baiknya caption text ditulis dalam kalimat simple present tense. Hal ini dikarenakan kalimat
simple present tense lebih mudah untuk dipahami oleh para pembaca, sehingga pesannya akan
mudah tersampaikan.

D. Generic Structure
Caption text, despite a very short type of text, also has a generic structure as in other kinds of texts.
Here is the structure:

3. Section Heading
