2,500 guests expected at Kraton wedding

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Mon, 10/17/2011 10:43 AM | Approximately 2,500 guests are expected to attend the third day of ceremonies for the royal wedding of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono Xs youngest daughter, Gusti Kanjeng Ratu Bendara, at Yogyakarta Palace on Tuesday. The four-day ceremony of Bendara, 25, and Kanjeng Pengeran Haryo Yudhanegara, 30, began with a plangkahan ritual held at the sultans residence, the Kraton Kilen, on Sunday. To avoid traffic congestion around the palace, including on Yoygakarta's famous main street, Jl. Malioboro, on Tuesday, all guests have been asked to park their vehicles at Alun-Alun Utara square. The weddings organizing committee has said they will provide five shuttle buses for guests to reach the wedding venue at Kepatihan. The wedding reception is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Yogyakarta administration spokesman Sigit Haryanto said Sunday as quoted by Antara state news agency. On Tuesday afternoon, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Vice President Boediono are scheduled to attend the panggih ritual, an event held to ceremonially meet the bride and groom after both have officially become husband and wife.

Inmates linked to failed Bali drug smuggling attempt

The Jakarta Post | Mon, 10/17/2011 11:29 PM The Ngurah Rai International Airport customs office announced on Sunday the arrests of three Indonesians who were allegedly members of an international drug ring connected to prisoners behind bars in Jakarta and Bali. Officials also seized 3.75 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine. The suspects were identified as Theresia Avilla Yanti Siwi, 39, an English language teacher in Malang, East Java, her cousin Erika, and Nurhadi Imron. Siwi was arrested on Oct. 10 a few minutes after she disembarked from a plane that brought her from Kenya via Doha and Singapore. Suspicious about her restless demeanor, officers inspected her and her luggage more closely. The X-ray machine detected the presence of a strange object inside her bag. The officers opened the bag and found a smaller black bag. They opened the second bag and checked its inner lining. Hidden inside the lining was a black package that contained 3.75 kilogram of crystal meth with a street value of around Rp 9.4 billion. She claimed that she didn t know the package contained crystal methamphetamine, customs office head I Made Wijaya said. Siwi said that she needed money to continue her education and her cousin Erika had offered her an opportunity to earn money by traveling to Maputo, Mozambique, where Erika s boyfriend would give her a product sample to take to Bali, according to officials. Siwi admitted that she was given US$200 by Erika to cover her travel and was promised Rp 7 million upon her return with the sample. Tickets and accommodation had been prepared by Erika. The following day, customs officials and plainclothes narcotics detectives arrested Erika in a rented room in Denpasar. The room was where Siwi was to hand the package to Erika. On Oct. 14, Bali Police officers and customs agents arrested a third suspect, Nurhadi Imron, in a hotel in Kuta. Nurhadi was the second courier in the scheme. He was supposed to take the package from Erika and transport it to Jakarta, Bali Police narcotics directorate chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Asmiriwati said Nurhadi s testimony surprised investigating officers. He claimed to have been hired by RT, an inmate in Jakarta s Pondok Bambu penitentiary. RT later told detectives that he was working for JC, currently incarcerated at Bali s Kerobokan prison. We are now investigating the involvement of the two inmates in the failed smuggling attempt, Asmiriwati said.

Island beat: Denpasar to hold emergency drills

DENPASAR: The city administration will organize several emergency simulations and trainings, including evacuation drills, to improve the ability of residents to cope with emergencies. The simulations and trainings will be held at schools and community centers across the city. In the aftermath of the recent quake we saw that many people were injured when they tried to escape in a panic. They eventually fell down or were trampled upon by the other people, Denpasar mayor IB Rai Dharmawijaya Mantra said. This reflects the fact that our people are not well-prepared to deal with an emergency situation, he said. I have asked all relevant agencies to draw up a plan for a crisis management program. Public education, including simulations and trainings, will be a key point in this program, he added. The program will also require all public buildings in the city to be equipped with standard emergency equipment, including emergency exits
