Komunikasi lewat jaringan akses tembaga dengan kapasitas bandwith yang
terbatas dianggap tidak dapat memenuhi kebutuhan layanan broadband yang
semakin meningkat. Teknologi GPON dengan bandwidth 2,488 Gbps dibuat
untuk memenuhi kebutuhan pengguna sekarang dan waktu yang akan datang.
Teknologi Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) adalah suatu teknologi akses
yang dikategorikan sebagai Broadband Access berbasis kabel fiber optic yang
telah dirilis oleh International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication
(ITU-T)
Dengan GPON, selain meningkatkan kapasitas bandwidth dan kecepatan akses,
teknologi ini juga mendukung 3 layanan komunikasi : suara, video dan data dalam
satu media koneksi atau yang dikenal dengan istilah Triple Play Services.
Teknologi ini sangatlah tepat digunakan oleh perusahaan-perusahaan besar yang
dalam kesehariannya memerlukan koneksi dengan kecepatan akses dan bandwith
yang tinggi. Selain itu teknologi GPON juga lebih efisien karena menggunakan
arsitektur point to multipoint sehingga lebih menghemat penggunaan core
ketimbang teknologi yang berarsitektur point to point.

Communication for Copper access network with limited bandwidth capacity can
not comply the needs of the growing broadband services. GPON technology that
has a bandwidth of 2.488 Gbps was made to comply the requirement of the
current users and also for the future users.
Technology Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) is an access technology
that is categorized as a Broadband Access based fiber optic cables that have been
released by the International Telecommunication Union-Telecommunication
(ITU-T).
With GPON, besides to increasing the bandwidth capacity and access speed. This
technology also supports three communication services : voice, video and data in
one connection medium or well known as Triple Play Services. This technology is
appropriately used by large companies are in daily need a connection with an
access speed and high bandwidth. In addition, GPON technology is also more
efficient core because it uses point to multipoint architecture Making it more
economize than technology with point to point architectures.
