TELEVISION

At present, almost every family has television, especially those who live in big cities. Now,
television is not one of luxurious things anymore because it is so common that almost every family has
one.
Many people, old and young, spend their time watching television, since there are a lot of television
programs we can enjoy. There are music, film, sport, news and many other programs we can choose as
we wish. An interesting program makes us keep watching it, so that sometimes we forget what we
should do. It can be a disturbance for us, but we still love to watch it.
Everything in this world leads to two sides; good and bad, and so does television. As one of the mass
media, television really brings many results; of course, there are good results, and bad ones. The good
results for us are that we get entertainment. It makes us happy, and it also gives information and
knowledge.
On the other hand, television shows programs that are not suitable for our culture, custom
and age. For example, the romantic and action films, that are shown at noon when children stay at
home and watch them.
However, in some ways television is very useful to us. We can choose the programs in line with our
favourite programs. We, however, should consider many aspects.

What is so special about this date? 11 th June 1983 was the date when a total solar eclipse
happened over Indonesia. But how did it happen? It is interesting to learn how an eclipse happens.
We know that the moon goes around earth, dont we? And the earth goes around the sun,
doesnt it? When the moon passes between the sun and the earth, the shadow of the moon falls on
the earth. In this part of the earth people do not have sun light. It made darkness during the mid
day. We call this a solar eclipse because we cannot see a part or the whole of the sun.
In fact, a solar eclipse is not a rare event, because it happens every eighteen months.
However, a total solar eclipse, that is when the sun become totally dark, happens only once in 350
years at any given place. The 1983 total eclipse began at sunrise in the Indian Ocean. The shadow
moved quickly across the ocean towards the east, and passed Java, bringing darkness right in the
middle of the day. People did not dare to look at the sun during the eclipse. It is dangerous to
look up at the sun because it may cause blindness. It is wise to look after our eyes, isnt it?

An oil product called kerosene has replaced firewood in the kitchen of our cities.
Motor vehicles using gasoline or diesel oil have put animal - drawn vehicles into museum.
Steams ships have lost against motor vehicles. Diesel locomotives have driven steam

Water is a very important thing for people to survive. We can not live without water every day.
An adult person need at least eight glasses a day unless he can suffer from dehydration. It means
that they die because lack of water. So we must be sure that we drink enough water moreover when
we suffer from diarrhea.

Unfortunately, we are facing some problems dealing with water. The first one is fresh water
now becomes more and more difficult to get, especially in big cities. Under ground water resources
become inadequate compared with the demand of fresh water. And the second and worst thing is
that water pollution happens almost every where. What causes water pollution? Besides rubbish
everywhere, the main causes of water pollution is factory and chemical wastes. These wastes are
dangerous for they can not dissolve by water. These wastes make water around us contaminated and
so as the consequents, it is not healthy to consume.

The Seasons in Indonesia

The season in Indonesia is different from those in Europe. In Indonesia there are only
two seasons, namely wet and dry season. In the dry season the temperature may reach more
than 35 degrees centigrade. It is hot outside and the sun shines brightly. However, in many
high building in big cities, you will not get any problems because you can find air condition.
Thin clothes are suitable for the daily use.. Fruit crops may take place in this season such as
melon, mangoes, pineapples, and also water melon. The dry season can be a picnic time.
The wet season is a little bit boring. It almost rains everyday. The sky is always
cloudy as if the sun is hiding behind it. However, the rainy season brings happiness to the
farmers because the rice field depends on the water, either river water or rain water. So
their crops grow well and they can get money by selling them in the market.

NATURAL RESOURCES

The materials supplied by the earth that is by nature, are called natural

resources. Some natural resources can be used again and again. They are called

renewable resources. Other natural resources can be used only once. They are called

non renewable resources.

Some areas of the earth have been supplied with a lot of certain natural

resources. Others have few natural resources or perhaps none at all. Japan, for

example, import iron sand from Indonesia because this country has only few certain

kinds of natural resources, the country will try to get ones from other countries.

The important part to the earths surface provide many of our natural

resources. For example, we get our water from lakes and streams. Water is a natural

resource. We get wood from our forests. Wood is a natural resource. The materials

we use come from the inside of the earth. Gold, silver, and cooper are minerals.

Air, too, is a natural resource. In fact it is one of our most important natural

resources. Well die without enough air to breathe. In some cities the air has

become polluted because cars and other motor vehicles emit gas that mixes with the

air. Steps now are being taken to make air clean.
