At the end of the course, the students will be able to:
1. Recognize evidence-based practice (EBP) as one of five core competencies all health professionals should
possess regardless of their title or discipline
2. Discuss the evolution and important of evidence based practice in Health care
3. Identify two characteristics differentiating research utilization and EBP in nursing.
4. Discuss the nurse’s role in EBP.
5. Describe the 5 steps of the EBP process
6. Asking and writing a researchable clinical question
7. Finding relevant evidence to answers to the clinical question
8. Critically appraise scientific evidence for its validity, reliability, and practical application to a clinical
question
9. Moving from evidence to sustainable practice change
10. Creating and sustaining a culture and environment for evidence based practice
11. Disseminating evidence and EBP implementation outcomes
Deskripsi Bahan Kajian & Description of Course
Pokok Bahasan The emphasis for this course is on the elements of evidence-based practice. Focus is placed on the cyclical process
of identifying clinical questions, searching and appraising the evidence for potential solutions/innovations, planning
and implementing practice changes, evaluating the outcomes, and identifying additional gaps in nursing
knowledge. Integration of the existing evidence with clinical judgment, patient preferences, inter-professional
perspectives, and other resources forms the basis for the clinical decision-making process that is inherent in
improving patient, population, and organizational outcomes. Processes for leading/managing practice changes are
explored.

Week 3, Group Discussion: Discovering the Culture of Inquiry Find out how EBP & nursing research are supported & implemented throughout
the organization.
Discussion Participation:
- Identify five Practice Issues in your organization; one of these will become the basis for the other assignments in this course.
- Ask your manager or supervisor for ideas. They may know of initiatives that could use a little evidence.
- Think about times when you ask yourself” Why something is done a certain way?” For example: why are chest x-rays ordered for pre op
patients?
- Check with the Quality Department, Infection Control, Performance Improvement activities, etc. Actively discuss yours and other friends
Week 5, Written Assignment: The Burning Question
Formulate one well defined clinical question that will yield the most relevant and best evidence. This will be the question you will use for the
rest of the written assignments for this course. Describe the background of the question, present the question using the PICO format, and why
this is the question you have selected. Paper length a minimum of 500 and maximum of 750 words. APA format must be used. No abstract is
required.
Due date: Week 6
Week 11 Written Assignment: Systematic Review and Synthesis
Select 5 articles pertaining to the question you have formulated. Review the articles using a table format. Provide an introduction, your
synthesis of the information you have reviewed and conclusion. Articles must be recent, published within the last 5 years and must be from a
peer reviewed journal. Paper length a minimum of 1250 words and maximum of 1400 words. APA format must be used. No abstract is required.
Due date: Week 14
Week 13
Written Assignment: Disseminating Evidence Project Now that you have completed steps 1-5 of the EBP Process, it's time to disseminate your
findings to make changes in practice. Prepare a written plan on how you plan to disseminate your work in your organization. Prepare the
tools/materials you will need to best present your proposal for change. It can be any of a variety of ways as we have studied. Paper length a
minimum of 750 words, maximum 800 words and the appropriate tools/material. APA format must be used. No abstract is required.
