Pengertian Present Participle

Dalam grammar bahasa Inggris present participle atau yang lebih dikenal dengan verb-
ingadalah bentuk participle yang menambahkan akhiran -ing pada kata tertentu  dalam bahasa
Inggris.  Dengan akhiran –ing yang ditambahkan pada suatu kata, sebuah present participle
bisa berfungsi baik sebagai modifier dari sebuah verb atau bahkan sebagai sebuah verb dalam
kalimat.

Sebagai modifier, sebuah present participle berfungsi mengubah bentuk suatu verb sebagai
adjective yang membentuk sebuah noun phrase atau sebagai gerund yang dapat mengubah
sebuah verb menjadi noun sepertihalnya bentuk gerund dalam future tense.
Sementara sebagai sebuah verb dalam kalimat sebuah present participle digunakan pada
bentuk kalimat continuous dalam setiap tenses dalam bahasa Inggris yang menyisipkan
makna ‘sedang atau tengah berlaku’ pada sebuah tindakan atau  sebagai salah satu bentuk
verb dalam rumus future tense yang menjadi opsi lain untuk menyatakan ‘akan’ selain
auxiliary verbs seperti will/shall.

positif I have watched the movies
S + aux. verb(have/has) + V-3/past participle
(+) She has died
negatif S + aux. verb(have/has) + not + V-3/past I have not watch the movie
(-) participle She hasn’t died
interogatif Have I read the book
aux. verb(have/has) + S + V-3/past participle

Contoh bentuk-bentuk present participle dalam kalimat:

1. Present participle sebagai verb

 I am going home.
The man is sleeping.
2. Present participle sebagai adjective

 A working man.
What an amazing night!

3. Present participle sebagai gerund

 That boy was so keen of lying.

Anak itu sangat ingin berbohong

Contoh Soal :
1. The money was offered by the client was not accepted.  

2. The car listed in the advertisement had already stalled.    

3. The chapters were taught by the professor this morning will be on next week’s

exam.   
4. The loaves of bread were baked in a brick oven at a low temperature for many
hours.
