RINGKASAN PENELITIAN

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk membaca citraan atau representasi sosok pemimpin
dalam film Jokowi: A Living Legend. A True Inspirational Story. Peneliti mengkaji
konstruksi sosok pemimpin melalui analisa verbal dan non-verbal dari film tersebut, yaitu
pada bentuk tuturan, gambar, dan scene. Selain itu, penelitian ini ingin menunjukkan
bahwa wacana sosok pemimpin. Pembentukan makna akan sosok pemimpin ini nantinya
dikonsumsi dan direproduksi sehingga membentuk sebuah budaya masyarakat berupa
pengetahuan mengenai sosok pemimpin.
Pemaknaan akan sosok pemimpin ini merupakan sebuah mitos. Seperti dikutip dari
buku Roland Barthes bahwa mitos merupakan sebuah bentuk pewicaraan. Karenanya
sebuah mitos tidak serta merta muncul dan bersifat abadi. Ia menjadi mitos karena adanya
proses komunikasi. Penelitian ini melihat bahwa di dalam film ini ada bentuk pewicaraan
atau konstruksi-konstruksi berupa representasi sosok pemimpin yang merupakan mitos
semata.
Konsepsi representasi dipakai dalam penelitian karena film ini banyak menggunakan
simbol-simbol berupa gambar, suara, dan scene yang melaluinya membentuk pesan dan
tanda. Melalui pesan dan tanda tersebut terbentuklah sebuah representasi sosok pemimpin.
Penelitian ini mengacu metode analisa semiotika, sehingga akan menunjukkan bagaimana
sosok pemimpin direpresentasikan.
Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menemukan bahwa terdapat pembagian identitas atau
karakteristik antara rakyat, pemimpin, dan Joko Widodo. Rakyat direpresentasikan
melalui penggunaan kostum dan setting sosial sebagai marginal. Pemimpin sendiri di
dalam film ini digunakan sebagai sebuah konsep identitas dengan melihat pada relasinya
dengan rakyat. Penggunaan seragam dan sifat hubungannya atau relasi dengan rakyat
direpresentasikan dalam sikap yang agresif. Sebagai contoh, beberapa scenes dalam film
ini menunjukkan petugas yang berseragam berkonfrontasi dengan rakyat melalui aksi
penggusuran. Sosok pemimpin dalam arti sosok yang mengayomi dan dekat dengan
rakyat dihilangkan (absent) dan digantikan melalui peran petugas sebagai representasi
perpanjangan tangan dari pemimpin. Sedangkan Joko Widodo digambarkan sebagai
bagian dari rakyat namun memiliki identitas yang berbeda. Hal ini digambarkan melalui
scenes dan cuplikan gambar yang menunjukkan sosok Joko Widodo sebagai pribadi yang
brilian dalam pendidikan; kerap juara kelas, aktif dalam kegiatan belajar, peduli pada
rakyat kecil dengan gambar berupa aksi membantu wanita tua yang miskin, serta saleh
dengan gambar-gambar yang menunjukkan dia ikut mengaji serta rajin shalat.
Selain membaca bagaimana film ini merepresentasikan identitas rakyat, pemimpin,
dan Joko Widodo, peneliti juga menemukan bagaimana identitas politik digunakan
sebagai sebuah konstruksi terhadap sosok pemimpin dalam Joko Widodo. Identitas politik
Joko Widodo yaitu suku Jawa dan agama Islam sangat jelas ditonjolkan melalui
simbol-simbol tertentu seperti pewayangan dan nasihat (old saying) Jawa, serta kegiatan
ibadah dalam agama Islam. Ke dua hal ini sebenarnya merupakan hal yang umum, namun
melihat keseluruhan scenes serta dengan asumsi akan adanya komunikasi politik yang
mengkonstruksi sosok pemimpin dalam film ini, maka keduanya menjadi sebuah identitas
politik yang dikonstruksikan. Sosok pemimpin dalam Joko Widodo direpresentasikan
sebagai sosok yang menjadi bagian dari rakyat dengan karakteristik tertentu yang menjadi

pembeda. Bentuk identitas politik lain yang dikonstruksikan pada film ini mengambil
pada karakteristik bangsa Indonesia yang majemuk. Mengambil kata kunci pluralitas dan
kaitannya dengan kontestasi antara kelompok mayoritas dengan minoritas, maka
konstruksi ini mengambil bagaimana sosok Jokowi divisualkan sebagai individu yang
toleran. Konstruksi sosok Jokowi sebagai pemimpin dengan menggunakan identitas
marginal dan etnisitas Jawa dalam film bukanlah sebuah realitas semata (demikian pula
dengan konstruksi identitas politik Jokowi yang pluralis dan agamis) tidak lain hanyalah
suatu kategori atau materi politik yang dikomunikasikan dalam film.
Hal lain yang peneliti temukan adalah film ini merepresentasikan karakter
kepemimpinan dari sosok Joko Widodo. Sosok Jokowi sebagai pemimpin dalam film ini
dikonstruksikan sebagai seorang pemimpin yang transformasional. Kepemimpinan
transformasional ini divisualkan secara jelas melalui scene awal dan akhir dari film. Di
bagian awal terdapat visualisasi kondisi pasar dan pada scene akhir film juga kembali
ditampilkan kondisi pasar. Di kedua kondisi pasar ini terdapat sebuah perbedaan yang
besar yang ditunjukkan melalui perubahan dari situasi yang tak teratur (pasar liar dan ada
penggusuran oleh aparat menjadi teratur (terlokalisir) dan para pedagang nyaman
berjualan.

SUMMARY

This study aims to read the representation of a leader in a movie titled Jokowi: A
Living Legend. A True Inspirational Story. The writer analyses how the idea of leader is
constructed through verbal and non verbal analysis, which is in form of utterance, images,
and scenes. Moreover, this research shows the idea of a leader can be communicated as
something populer through mass media, particularly a movie. The constructed meaning of
leader through this practice of communication can later on be consumed and reproduced,
and eventually accepted in the society as something common.
The concept of a leader is a myth. Citing from Roland Barthes, myth is an act of talks.
It needs to be communicated in order to be a myth. (Barthes, Thus, a myth does not
merely occur and everlast. This study shows that within this movie there are forms of
communication or constructions that represent the meaning of leader, and eventually it
becomes the myth.
The concept of representation is used in this study since it uses many symbols such
as images, sounds, and scenes from which the meaning and signs formed. Through those
messages and signs, the meaning or representation of leader appears. This study uses
semiotic as the method of analysis. Thus, besides showing how a figure of leader is
represented, it also reveals meaning behind the constructions.
In this study, the writer finds that there is a distinguished identities or characteristics
between the people, leader, and Joko Widodo. The people is represented through
costumes and social settings as marginal. The leader in this movie is used as a concept or
represented through the relation with the people. The use of uniform and the
characteristic of relationship with the people is shown as aggresive. For example, some
scenes in the movie shows that people in uniforms confront with people through the act
of eviction. The characteristics of leader that protect and close to the people are absent in
the movie. Moreover, it is subtituted with the role of officers. Meanwhile, the figure of
Joko Widodo is visualized as part of the people but with distinctive characteristics such as
putting education in front, protecting the weak, and being a devoted moslem. These are
pictured through scenes dan images that show Joko Widodo as a briliant figure in
education (often being the first in class and active in the process of study) care to the
weak or marginalized people (shown through his act of helping old and poor woman),
and a devoted person (visualized with his activity such as shalat and citing the Quran)
Besides of reading how the movie represents three different identities: the people or
society, leader, and Joko Widodo, the writer also finds that political identities are used as
constructions of a figure of leader in Joko Widodo. Joko Widodo’ s politic identities, Java
etnicity and moslem, are clearly stressed on through symbols such as puppets (wayang),
Javanese wisdoms, and religious acts in Islamic tradition. These are actually common
things. Something that the audience may take for granted. Looking at the whole scenes
and with the assumption of political communication that constructs a figure of leader,
thus, it contains meaning of Joko Widodo political identity.
On the side politic of identity, the figure of leader in Joko Widodo is represented as a
figure who belongs to the people, but with certain characteristics that become the
distinction. Another form of political identity that is being constructed takes in the idea of
Indonesia’s plurality. Taking the key concept of plurality and its relation to the

contestation between the majority and the minority, the construction accurs in Joko
Widodo as a tolerant figure.
The construction of Joko Widodo as a leader using marginality and Javanese etnicity
is not merely a reality (and so is the construction of Joko Widodo identity politic as
pluralist and religious). It is no more than a political material that is being
communicated .
Furthermore, the writer found that the movie represents the characteristic of
leadership in a figure of Joko Widodo. The figure of Joko Widodo is construsted as a
transformative leader. Transformational leadership is visualized through the first and the
last scene. In the first scene there is a visualization of market setting, and the same
visualization reappears in the last scene. In these two different scenes there is a big
difference which is shown from the change of the market situation. The first scene shows
how the traditional market is wild, messy, and the sellers get involved in a fight with
officers (Satpol PP), while in the last scene the traditional market is shown as located,
organized, and the sellers are happy.

ABSTRAK

Makna sosok pemimpin kerap didiskusikan dan dikontestasikan. Perkembangan dari

teknologi menunjukkan perubahan dalam cara pengkomunikasian makna seorang atau
sosok pemimpin. Melalui film-film bergenre biopik, beberapa film muncul dengan
ide-ide yang mengkomunikasikan makna sosok pemimpin. Sebagai sebuah medium
visual, elemen-elemen di dalam film dapat digunakan untuk mengkonstruksi dan menjadi
pengantar pesan tersebut. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana sosok
pemimpin direpresentasikan dalam sebuah film.
Penelitian kualitatif ini dilakukan melalui analisa terhadap film dengan judul Jokowi;
A Living Legend A True Inspirational Story. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah representasi
sosok pemimpin dalam film. Metode semiotika digunakan untuk menganalisa
simbol-simbol dalam film yang mengandung tanda-tanda, pesan, dan makna dari sosok
pemimpin. Secara spesifik, teori Mitos dari Roland Barthes digunakan bersamaan dengan
beberapa konsep kunci seperti representasi, film sebagai medium komunikasi massa, dan
identitas politik.
Sebagai kesimpulan, film ini mengandung representasi sosok pemimpin di dalam
karakter utama film yaitu Joko Widodo. Representasi ditunjukkan melalui pembagian
karakteristik antara rakyat, pemimpin, dan Joko Widodo. Penulis juga mengamati
penggunaan identitas politik sebagai representasi Joko Widodo sebagai pemimpin. Lebih
jauh lagi, di dalam film ditemukan bentuk representasi Joko Widodo sebagai pemimpin
yang transformatif

ABSTRACT

The meaning of being a leader and leadership is oftenly discussed or contested,

especially during campaigns for election or when the society questions their leader’s
performances. The development of technology shows the shift in communicating the
maeaning of being a leader and leadership. Through movies with biopic genre, several
movies come with ideas that communicate the ideal meaning of being a leader and
leadership. As a visual medium, elements within a film can be used to construct and
deliver messages. This study aims to see how leadership or a leader is represented in a
movie.
This qualitative study is conducted by analizing a film titled Jokowi; A Living Legend
A True Inspirational Story. The subject of the research is the representation of a leader in
the movie. Semiotic method is used to analyze and breakdown the movie into symbols
that contain signs, messages, and meanings of leadership or being a leader. Spesifically,
the theory of Myth by Roland Barthes is used along with several related key concepts
such as representation, movie as a mass medium, political communication, and others.
As a result, the movie contains of representation of a leader inside the main character
which is Joko Widodo. The representation is shown through the differentiation of
characteristics between the people (society), ruler (leader), and Joko Widodo. The writer
also notices how politic identity and identity politic are used to represent Joko Widodo as
a leader. Furthermore, the writer also found that the movie represents Joko Widodo as a
transformative leader.
