It was a school holiday when my family went for a tour to Belitung Island, The Island
of “Negeri Laskar Pelangi’. We departed by plane from Surabaya and stopped for a while in
Sukarno Hatta Airport Jakarta. From there, we continued the journey to Palembang-Batam-
Bangka. From Bangka we continued the journey to Belitung by a ship from Pangkal Balam
harbor and arrived in Tanjung Pandan harbor an hour later. You know, because of the well-
known novel of Laskar Pelangi, the Tanjung Pandan harbor was replaced by ‘Laskar Pelangi
harbor. It was a long journey and made us feel so tired, so we decided to check in to the hotel
and have a rest.
The next day, we went to Gantung, the location where the movie ‘Laskar Pelangi’ was
taken. We took some pictures of it and the school as the background. Then, we rented for a
small boat to the north of Tanjung Kelayang to Lengkuas Island. It is a small island that can
be travelled for about 20 minutes. The most interesting place there is the old lighthouse built
by the Dutch government in 1882. Having travelled around, we spent an hour in Bukit
Menumbing for lunch and did other interesting activities. We stayed in Belitung for a week. It
was long journey, but we felt excited that we could visit Belitung, one of the beautiful islands
in Indonesia.

Wine for feast

Once a king decided to have a great feast. He invited everyone in the city. He asked
each family to bring a bowl of wine.
On the day of the feast, everyone washed and dressed in their fine clothes, and set out
for the king’s palace. One man looked out his window. He saw many other families walking
by, each carrying a bowl of wine. He said to his wife, “I don’t want to spend money for wine,
how can we go to the feast without it?”
She answered, “Fill the bowl with water. When it is mixed with so many other bowls of
wine, no one will know.” He agreed and filled the bowl with water. Then they went to the
feast.
When people arrived at the feast, they emptied their bowls into an enormous basin. The
man and his wife poured their bowl of water into the basin as well. They smiled at each other.
“No one will know,” they thought.
When it was time for the feast to begin, the wine was served. The man lifted the glass to
his lips and tasted the wine. He tasted it again. It was nothing but water. For each family that
came thought, “With so many bowls of wine, one bowl of water will not make a difference.
No one will know.” And now the large pot held nothing but water, and that was all they had to
drink at the feast.
When only water was brought, only water can be drunk.

Benteng Belgica of Belgica fort is a heritage fortress from Portugese built in Bandaneire,
Maluku Tengah. Bandaneira was important for Dutch and Portuguese since it produced some
of rare spices. Since this city was the center of trading, a fortress needed to be built. This

each side of the fort, and stair to reach the peak of the tower. From the peak, we can see the
Banda Islands with naked eyes.

Jellyfish are not really fish. They are invertebrate animals. This means that unlike fish
or people, they have no backbones. In fact, they have no bones at all.
Jellyfish have stomachs and mouths, but no heads. They have nervous systems for
sensing the world around them, but no brains. They are made almost entirely of water, which
is why you can look through them.
Some jellyfish can glow in darkness by making their own light. The light is made by a
chemical reaction inside the jellyfish. Scientists believe jellyfish glow for several reasons. For
example, they may glow to scare away predators or to attract animals they like to eat.
Most jellyfish live in salt water, apart from a few types that live in fresh water.
Jellyfish are found in oceans and seas all over the world. They live in warm, tropical seas and

Text for questions 18 to 20.

The importance of reading to children is obvious to every parent. Reading to

children is one of the best ways to put them on success-academically and personally.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly recommends reading to children
every day, starting after they are first born, because reading stimulates the development
of the brain, language and a closer emotional relationship with a child.
You can start reading to children right from the moment they are born. Infants
love to hear the voices of their parents. It doesn’t matter what you read. The most
important thing is a togetherness of you and your baby. As your child gets older and can
understand the stories you read, take time to ask questions, e.g. what do you think will
happen next? Do you know what this word means? Which character is your favorite?
You can retell the story or make up a new one with the same characters.
Reading to children is so crucial that parents should find time to do it every day.
You will be surprised at how creative you are at finding time to read a
story to your children. Read while waiting to see the pediatrician, having a treat at a
restaurant or waiting in line at the store. You can read aloud in the morning before
school and, of course, at bedtime. Read a story while waiting for the bus or rain or once
aboard. Make tapes of yourself or another family member reading stories and play them
in the car on the way to school or daycare.
Parents aren’t alone in understanding the importance of reading to children. Good
teachers read aloud in the classroom. Talk to your child’s teacher to get suggestions for
books to read and observe the class to get tips on reading aloud. Older siblings,
relatives, and friends may also enjoy reading aloud. When your child is ready,
encourage her to read aloud to you and the rest of the family. This will pave the way for
a love of reading.

18. What is the text about?

A. Teaching reading to children.
B. How to teach children reading.
C. How reading stimulates the brain.
D. The importance of reading to children.
E. The effective way to teach reading.

19. The parents can begin teaching to read to children ....

A. very early childhood
B. after they begin to school
C. when they can read aloud
D. after they get older
E. when they can talk

20. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?

A. Parents should find time to read to their children.
B. Reading aloud can be done before going to school.
C. Parents should encourage their children to read.
D. Parents can read a story before bedtime.
E. Reading is better than watching TV.

Endangered or Is It Too Late?

Many plant and animal species around the world are endangered. One of the main reasons is
that humankind is destroying the natural habitats where these plants and animals live. People
destroy forests to cut trees for new housing and industry. Another reason is climate change
which is also caused by humans. Endangered animals in Indonesia include the rhinoceros,
tiger, orangutan, proboscis monkey and other creatures large and small. In Australia, the
numbat, the dugong, and the Australian sea animals are endangered. Although many
organizations around the world work hard to save these species, sometimes it’s too late and
the species becomes extinct.

Text for questions 30 to 32

Abdullah was one of the richest men in town, but you could easily mistake him for a
beggar. It was his theory that since there were so many people rob a rich man, it was safe to
pretend to be poor. And so he did.
But he really didn’t have to pretend. Stingy to the core he found it very easy to be
poor. So what it if people sniggered and children called out, Kanjoos! Kanjoos! (miser, miser)
whenever he passed by in his worn out clothes. Abdullah became more content with his
growing pile of money as the years went by.
One day, he bought a huge lump of gold with all the money he had amassed. He dug a
hole in the ground near an unused well and buried the gold by there. He was sure that no thief
would be able to find that place. With this happy thought, Abdullah checked on his treasure
daily. But can you really keep a hiding place hidden if you looked at it every day?. Before
long the town was whispering about Abdullah’s mysterious visits to the unused well in the
dead of the night. It wasn’t long before a curious soul discovered the gold, let out a yell of joy
and ran away with the miser’s treasure.
Naturally, on his next visit, Abdullah found the hole empty. He began howling with
grief and soon a crowd had assembled. They watched him grieve the way people mourn the
loss of a dear one.
Finally, a neighbor came forward and asked him to stop it. “You want your gold? Just
pick up a heavy stone and drop it in the hole. Pretend it is the gold you lost”

Text for questions 33 to 35

Global warming is the significant increase in the Earth’s temperature over a relatively
short period of time as a result of human activity. Scientists believe that the Earth is currently
facing period rapid warming brought by the rising levels of heat-trapping gases, known as
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases occurs naturally and without them, the
planet would be too cold to sustain life as we know it.
How does global warming occur? It occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air
pollutants and greenhouse gases collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar
radiation that have bounced off the earth’s surface. Normally, this radiation would escape into
space—but these pollutants, which can last for years to centuries in the atmosphere, trap the
heat and cause the planet to get hotter. That's what's known as the greenhouse effect.
In the United States, the burning of fossil fuels to make electricity is the largest source of
heat-trapping pollution, producing about two billion tons of CO2 every year. The country’s
second-largest source of carbon pollution is the transportation sector, which generates about
1.7 billion tons of CO2 emissions a year.
The impacts of global warming are tremendous. Extreme heat waves have caused tens of
thousands of deaths around the world in recent year. Antarctica has been losing about 134
billion metric tons of ice per year since 2002 . This rate could speed up if we keep burning
fossil fuels at our current pace, some experts say, and causing sea levels to rise several meters
over the next 50 to 150 years.

A. Carbon dioxide and greenhouse gases collect in the atmosphere and trap
the heat

Stephen King’s new ‘Joyland’ mixes chills with amusement park thrills

Set in a small-town North Carolina amusement park in 1973, Joyland tells the story
of the summer in which college student Devin Jones comes to work as a carrier and
confronts the legacy of a vicious murder, the fate of a dying child, and ways both will
change his life forever.
“Joyland” has a patina of the supernatural : There is the ghost as well as Devin’s
friendship with a 10-year-old disabled boy named Mike, who is gifted with an “authentic
psychic ability” that is “like touching another world.” Still, for all that this helps drive
the narrative, it ultimately brings us back to Devin, to the novel’s human heart.
The newest novel from the prolific Stephen King, Joyland is not what I was
expecting. We often talk about reader expectation here at The book Smugglers, usually
in the context of the hype preceding a book, or the marketing campaign around said
book. In the case of Joyland, from the vague synopsis and pulpy cover, I confess that I
was expecting something gloriously ostentatious, something excessive. A horror story
about a haunted carnival ground, in which Evil itself has manifested in the murder of
unsuspecting pretty young things, perhaps, Imagine my delight then, when I discovered
this most certainly was not the case.
But ultimately? Joyland isn’t about ghost of murders or unmasking a killer. A
heart, it’s a book growing up and moving on. It’s a bittersweet tale of love and
heartbreak, sadness and healing. And aren’t those the best kind of stories? One of the
best Stephen King novels I’ve read in years, I thoroughly enjoyed Joyland-and it’s in the
running for one of my notable books for 2013. It absolutely recommended. Joyland will
be coming out in paperback, and folks who want to read it will have to buy the actual
book.”
