CONDITIONAL SENTENCE

PENGERTIAN CONDITTIONAL SENTENCE

Dalam Bahasa Indonesia, conditional sentence adalah kalimat pengandaian, bisa juga
disebut dengan kalimat bersyarat.

Conditional sentence mempunyai dua bagian, yaitu if-clause dan main clause, dimana If
clause berisi ‘syarat’ sedangkan Main clause berisi ‘apa yang diandaikan’
Contoh:

If Clause Main Clause

If I study hard, I will pass the exam

Posisi clause bisa dibalik, menjadi :

Main Clause If clause

I will pass the exam If I study hard.

Tidak diperlukan tanda koma apabila If clause diposisikan dibelakang Main clause.

Ada 4 jenis conditional sentence yang masing-masing menggunakan bentuk TENSES yang
berbeda. Keempat jenis/ type tersebut adalah:
 Zero Conditional
 Conditional type 1
 Conditional type 2
 Conditional type 3

Zero Conditional

PATTERN:

IF CLAUSE MAIN CLAUSE

IF + SIMPLE PRESENT SIMPLE PRESENT

If this thing happens that thing happens.

1. If you heat ice it melts.

2. If I eat too much I feel sick.

USAGE

Zero Conditional digunakan untuk menyatak FAKTA ILMIAH / KEBENARAN UMUM atau
KEBIASAAN PERSONAL
Konsepnya :

IF THIS THING HAPPENS, THAT THING HAPPENS.

Jika terjadi A, maka akan terjadi B sebagai akibatnya.

Dengan demikian, Zero Conditional digunakan untuk PENGANDAIAN dalam konteks

SEBAB AKIBAT.
Misalnya :

 Jika es dipanaskan, es mencair Fakta/ Kebenaran umum

 Jika saya makan terlalu banyak, saya merasa sakit. Kebiasaan

Karena apa yang dinyatakan itu merupakan kebenaran umum/ kebiasaan, yang bisa
terjadi kapan saja (Lampau, Present, Future), maka Zero Conditional tidak menggunakan
“will” pada main Clause-nya.

YANG BENAR : BUKAN :

If you heat ice, it will melt.
If you heat ice, it melts.
If I eat too much, I will feel sick.
If I eat too much, I feel sick.

1. if you dry fruits and vegetables, they lose their nutrient and calorie.

2. If someone doesn’t drink after doing he/ she gets dehydrated.

Conditional type 1

PATTERN:

If this thing happens that thing will happen.

1. If you study hard, You will pass the exam.

2. If you don't hurry you will miss the train.

USAGE
Untuk menyatakan bahwa sesuatu akan terjadi (di waktu yang akan datang) jika sesuatu
yang menjadi syaratnya terjadi.
Dengan demikian, apa yang “diandaikan” dalam Conditional ini bisa terjadi bisa tidak,
bergantung pada terpenuhi/ tidaknya “syarat”.

- Jika kamu belajar keras, kamu akan lulus dalam ujian.

- Jika kamu tidak bergegas, kamu akan ketinggalan kereta.

Perbedaan Zero conditional dengan Conditional type 1

Zero Conditional Conditional Type 1

Berbicara tentang fakta/ kebenaran yang Berbicara tentang sesuatu yag belum
lintas waktu, yang berlaku kapan saja terjadi (Future), itulah sebabnya
(Lampau, Present, maupun Future) menggunakan “will”
