Background: Excessive amounts of free radicals cause oxidative stress which can
cause damage of cellular, tissues, and organs of the body which accelerate the
aging process and the diseases. Vitamin E is an antioxidant compound that can
prevent DNA damage and protect cell membranes from free radicals. A research
on the formulation of vitamin E gel microemulsion gel formulation with HPMC
K100M gelling agent has been carried out.
Objective: To determine the effect of variations in the level of gelling agent
HPMC K100M on the physical characteristics of antioxidant microemulsion
Vitamin E.
Method: Antioxidant activity test using the DPPH method, the analysis was done
descriptively (organoleptic, microemulsion type, homogeneity, and Freeze-Thaw
stability) and One-Way Annova statistical test (viscosity, dispersion, and pH).
Results and Conclusions: Vitamin E (a-tocopherol) microemulsion is a type
O/W preparation. Vitamin E (a-tocopherol) has an IC50 value of 133.71 ppm
which is categorized as a moderate antioxidant. The antioxidant activity of
vitamin E microemulsion preparations in the amount of 250 ppm has an %
Inhibitors of 68.2%. All gel microemulsion formulas have a soft, yellowish-white
texture and smell typical of vitamin E. The One-Way Annova statistical test
results found that the three formulas have significant differences for viscosity,
spreadability, and pH. Formula with a concentration of HPMC K100M 3% (FIII)
is the best formula because it enters more stable compared to other formulas.
