Tenses adalah bentuk kata kerja dalam Bahasa Inggris untuk menunjukkan
waktu (sekarang, masa depan, atau masa lampau) terjadinya suatu perbuatan
atau peristiwa.
Active Verbs Tenses:
Present

 Simple Present

1. Untuk menyatakan kejadian saat ini atau kondisi aksi;

• I hear you.
• Here comes the bus.
2. Untuk menyatakan kebenaran yang sudah umum;
• There are thirty days in September.
 Simple Present

3. Untuk menyatakan kejadian yang bukan suatu kegiatan atau kegiatan

yang menjadi rutinitas;
• I like music.
• I run on Tuesdays and Sundays.
4. Untuk menyatakan kejadian di masa depan.
• The train leaves at 4:00 p.m.
 Present Progressive

1. Untuk menyatakan aktivitas yang sedang berlangsung;

• I am playing soccer now.
2. Untuk menyatakan kata kerja persepsi.
• He is feeling sad.

1. Untuk menyatakan kejadian yang telah terjadi;

• We visited the museum yesterday.
2. Untuk menyatakan suatu kondisi yang sudah berlalu.
• The weather was rainy last week.
 Past Progressive

1. Untuk menyatakan suatu kejadian di masa lampau yang terjadi selama

periode waktu tertentu;
• They were climbing for twenty-seven days.
2. Untuk menyatakan suatu kejadian masa lampau yang disela oleh kejadian
lain.
• We were eating dinner when she told me the news.

1. Untuk menyatakan kejadian dengan menggunakan will/will not, atau
menyatakan aktifitas atau peristiwa yang akan atau tidak akan terjadi di
masa depan;
• I’ll get up late tomorrow.
• I won’t get up early.
2. Untuk menyatakan kejadian dengan menggunakan going to, atau kejadian
di masa depan yang berhubungan dengan masa sekarang;
• I am hungry.
• I am going to get something to eat.

 Present Perfect

1. Untuk menyatakan kejadian di masa lampau yang berlanjut ke masa kini;

• He has lived here for many years.
2. Untuk menyatakan suatu kebiasaan atau tindakan yang berkelanjutan;
• He has worn glasses all his life.
3. Untuk menyatakan kalimat yang menggunakan ever, never, before, atau
menyatakan peristiwa yang terjadi pada waktu yang tidak terbatas atau
tidak ditentukan di masa lalu.
• Have you ever been to Tokyo before?
 Present Perfect Progressive

Untuk menyatakan durasi suatu tindakan yang dimulai di masa lalu, berlanjut
hingga saat ini, dan mungkin berlanjut hingga masa depan.
• David has been working for two hours, and he hasn’t finished yet.

1. Untuk menggambarkan peristiwa atau kondisi masa lalu yang diselesaikan

sebelum peristiwa lain di masa lalu;
• When arrived home, he had already called.
2. Untuk menyatakan laporan suatu kejadian.
• Jane said that she had gone to the movies.

Future Perfect

Untuk menyatakan suatu tindakan yang akan diselesaikan pada atau sebelum
waktu tertentu di masa depan.
