Definisi Fail Safe
Sistem fail safe di definisikan sebagai sistem yang
output-nya akan deenergized (netral) bila terjadi kerusakan
(fail) terhadap komponen atau-pun rangkaian di dalam
control loop yang berhubungan dengan output tersebut.

Fungsi Fail Safe
Fungsi-fungsi ECU mesin dibedakan
menjadi control EFI, kontrol ESA, kontrol ISC,
fungsi diagnosis, fungsi fail-safe dan backup, dan
fungsi-fungsi lain.
Fungsi Fail Safe
Fungsi Fail Safe sebagai keamanan dan
kenyamanan pengemudi kendaraan apabila ada salah
satu sensor yang salah maka ECU akan mendapatkan
input dari sensor yang lain sebagai pengganti.
Fungsi back up sendiri akan menggantikan
fungsi sensor yang rusak /salah dengan data yang ada
pada memori di ECU sekaligus akan menginformasikan
fungsi sensor yang salah ini ke si pengemudi berupa
Engine warning lamp.
Tujuan Fungsi Fail Safe
Bila Ecu mesin mendeteksi kerusakan pada sistem sinyal input
yang manapun, fungsi fail-safe mengontrol mesin dengan menggunakan
nilai standar yang terdapat pada ECU mesin, atau menghentikan mesin
untuk mencegah masalah pada mesin atau overheating katalis yang dapat
terjadi bila kontrol berlanjut berdasarkan rangkaian dengan sinyal tidak
normal.
 Hubungan antara rangkaian dengan sinyal tidak normal dan fungsi
fail-safe ditunjukkan pada tabel di samping.

Sensor kecepatan kendaraan
01 depan dan belakang
Pada penggunaan Sebuah dualspeed
sensor. Sinyal kecepatan diambil dari transmisi
(dengan sensor kecepatan poros output). Bahkan
jika suatu sistem sensor tidak bekerja , kendaraan
dapat dikendalikan dengan normal dengan
menggunakan sistem sensor lainya yang
berfungsi dengan normal. Jika kedua sensor
kecepatan kendaraan depan dan belakang rusak,
kendaraan dibuat untuk beroperasi hanya dalam
kecepatan 3.
02 Sensor posisi throttle
Jika sensor posisi throttle rusak,
kontrol akan dipertahankan dengan
mengasumsikan bahwa pembukaan throttle
terjadi pada sudut tertentu. Sebuah perangkat
fail safe untuk sistem kontrol throttle elektronik
terdiri dari: sensor jumlah udara masuk untuk
mendeteksi jumlah udara masuk ke mesin; sensor
posisi throttle untuk mendeteksi tingkat
pembukaan throttle dari throttle kontrol
elektronik, kata throttle kontrol elektronik
mengendalikan katup throttle didasarkan pada
jumlah menekan akselerator.
 03 Inhibitor switch.
Jika TCM menerima sinyal yang
berbeda secara bersamaan dari saklar inhibitor
yang rusak, TCM akan memilih kisaran dalam
prioritas berikut: D> N (P)> R> 3> 2> 1>

04 Pada Selenoid
a. Pergeseran solenoid 1 dan 2
Jika kesalahan terjadi di salah satu dari
solenoida 1 dan 2, kedua solenoida tidak bisa
bekerja maksimal, dan gear akan di posisikan pada
gigi 3. Jika kedua solenoida rusak, TCM selalu
memilih dan menjaga gigi pada posisi gigi 3.
b. Solenoid line tekanan tinggi
Jika tugas solenoid line tekanan tinggi
rusak, solenoid tidak bisa bekerja maksimal dan
line-pressure dinaikkan secara maksimal untuk
memungkinkan kendaraan untuk beroperasi.
c. Lockup duty solenoid
Jika kinerja Lockup duty solenoid gagal,
solenoid tidak bisa bekerja maksimal dan lockup
cluth akan terlepas.

d. Transfer duty solenoid
Ketika kinerja transfer duty solenoid gagal, itu akan menyebabkan tidak maksimalnya kinerja solenoid
tersebut. Hal ini menyebabkan tekanan maksimum oli yang digunakan pada transfer cluth tidak akan maksimal
sehingga daya tersebut selalu ditransmisikan ke poros belakang (rear axle) (kondisi AWD langsung digabungkan).
e. rem solenoid Jika kesalahan terjadi di rem solenoid, solenoid tidak akan bekerja dengan maksimal dan penggunaan
gigi akan terbatas hanya pada gigi 1 dan 3.
f. Low-clutch timing solenoid
Jika kesalahan terjadi di low cluth timing solenoid, solenoid tidak akan bekerja dengan maksimal dan gigi
yang dapat digunakan hanya terbatas pada gigi 1 dan 3.
g. Brake timing solenoid
Jika kesalahan terjadi di brake timing solenoid, kinerja solenoid akan berkurang dan penggunaan gigi terbatas hanya
pada gigi 1 dan 3.
h. Torque converter turbine speed sensor
Jika kesalahan terjadi di torque converter turbine speed sensor, roda gigi yang dapat digunakan terbatas hanya pada
gigi 3 itu saja.
