PENGERTIAN TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT
Total Quality Manajemen System atau disingkat dengan
TQM adalah sebuah manajemen kualitas yang lebih
berfokus pada pelanggan dengan cara melibatkan seluruh
level tingkatan karyawan dalam mengerjakan peningkatan
ataupun perbaikan secara kontinyu.

Total Quality Management atau TQM akan lebih cenderung

memanfaatkan strategi, komunikasi dan data yang efektif
dalam mengintegrasikan kedisiplinan kualitas dalam
kegiatan operasional dan budaya perusahaan. Sederhananya,
TQM adalah suatu pendekatan manajemen yang digunakan
untuk menyentuh kesuksesan jangka panjang dengan
mengedepankan kepuasan pelanggan.
 Historisitas dan Urgensi Total Quality Management
(TQM)
Landasan Total Quality Management (TQM) adalah statistical process control (SPC) yang merupakan model
manajemen manufaktur, yang pertama-pertama diperkenalkan oleh Edwards Deming dan Joseph Juran
sesudah perang dunia II guna membantu bangsa Jepang membangun kembali infrastruktur negaranya. Ajaran
Deming dan Juran itu berkembang terus hingga kemudian dinamakan Total Quality Management (TQM) oleh
US Navy pada tahun 1985. Total Quality Management (TQM) terus mengalami evolusi menjadi semakin
matang dan mengalami diversifikasi untuk aplikasi dibidang manufaktur, industri jasa, kesehatan dan dewasa
ini juga dibidang pendidikan (Hardjosoedarmo, 2004: 9).

Dasar pemikiran perlunya Total Quality Management (TQM) sangat sederhana yakni bahwa cara terbaik agar
dapat bersaing dan unggul dalam persaingan global adalah dengan menghasilkan kualitas terbaik. Dalam
mencapai tujuan tersebut diperlukan upaya perbaikan berkesinambungan terhadap kemampuan manusia,
proses, dan lingkungan. Cara terbaik agar dapat memperbaiki kemampuan komponen-komponen tersebut
secara berkesinambungan adalah melalui penerapan Total Quality Management (TQM). Penerapan Total
Quality Management (TQM) dalam suatu perusahaan dapat memberikan beberapa manfaat utama yang pada
gilirannya akan meningkatkan laba serta daya saing perusahaan tersebut.
