Pengantar

Pada tahun 1911 di Surakarta berdiri sebuah perkumpulan dagang yang diberi
nama Kong Sing. Anggota perkumpulan tersebut terdiri atas dua golongan,
yaitu golongan orang Jawa dan orang Cina.
Tetapi terjadi perpecahan, anggota orang Jawa beranggapan, bahwa keluar dari
Kong Sing adalah langkah yang tepat, yang kemudian mereka membentuk
perkumpulan baru dengan nama Sarekat Dagang Islam.
Sarikat Dagang Islam didirikan pada 1911 di Solo oleh seorang pengusaha
batik di Laweyan Solo yang bernama Haji Samanhudi. Dasar organisasi ini
adalah, agama, yaitu Islam dan dasar ekonomi. Ide pendirian SDI ini
sebenarnya juga didasari atas dorongan RM. Tirtohadisuryo, mantan
mahasiswa STOVIA.

Berdirinya Sarikat Islam menjadi perkumpulan yang besar itu dapat

dipandang sebagai suatu pertanda telah bangkitnya masyarakat bumiputra di
Hindia Belanda yang ingin memperoleh pembaharuan dalam segala bidang
kehidupan.
