Tutorial 3: Clauses

 A clause is a part of sentence.

 It at least consists of a subject and a verb.
 Clause consists of:
a. Independent clause
b. Dependent clause
 Clause (klausa) dapat dihubungkan dengan coordination,
subordination dan titik koma.
 Example: I was singing when you came.
a. Independent clause : I was singing
b. Dependent clause : when you came
Independent clause

 It can stand alone as a sentence. (Dapat berdiri sendiri

sebagai satu kalimat).
 Jika terpisah dari klausa yang lain, maka statusnya
menjadi kalimat yang utuh.
 Independet clause dibuat untuk memenggal kalimat
agar tidak terlalu panjang.
 Dua independent clause dapat dihubungkan dengan
koma, conjunction (and, but, or, nor, for, yet, so) dan
titik koma.
Contoh:

a. Dua independent clause dihubungkan dengan koma:

I stepped inside, my arms turning to goose bumps from
the chill.
b. Dua independent clause dihubungkan dengan so:
The two girls were getting hungry then, so they
decided to go and find something to eat.
c. Dua independent clause dihubungkan dengan titik koma:
Eko is chubby, cute little boy; everybody loves him.
Dependent clause

 It cannot stand alone as a sentence. (Tidak dapat berdiri

sendiri sebagai satu kalimat).
 Dia tergantung pada independent clause.
 Dependent clause terdiri dari:
a. Adverb clause
b. Adjective clause
c. Noun clause
1. Adverb clause

 Explain the topic in the main verb. (Menerangkan

tentang apa yang dibicarakan dalam verba utama).
 Contoh:
a. When the working time is over, we’ll go shopping.
b. Haris will go home because he is sick.
2. Adjective clause

 Explain the topic in the main noun. (Menerangkan

tentang apa yang dibicarakan dalam nomina utama).
 Contoh:
a. His brother, who is a consultant, suffers from stroke.
b. My TV that is broken is being repaired.
3. Noun clause

 Noun clause adalah klausa dependen yang berfungsi

sebagai noun atau kata benda. Noun clause dapat
difungsikan sebagai subject ataupun object di dalam
suatu klausa.
 Contoh:
a. Do you know what that means?
b. What she does is no concern of mine.
