Objective: To examine the relationship between the degree of hyponatremia in patients with
tuberculous meningitis affecting mortality.
Materials and methods: This research was conducted in patients who were treated in
Tuberculous Meningitis / Neurology Department and Infection Centre Dr. Wahidin Sudirohusodo
Hospital, from 1 January to 30 June 2014. This study is a retrospective and descriptive
correlational, based on the degree of hyponatremia.
The results of the study: We enrolled 35 patients with TB meningitis consisted of 22 mens and
13 womens. In the study obtained 3% stage I, 83% stage II, 14% stage III. Hyponatremia was
found in 100% (35) patients, ie 14% by weight, 48% moderate, 37% mild. All patients had been
under correction of hyponatremia. Of the 35 patients who died 32 people. The prognosis of
patients with TB meningitis is accompanied with hyponatremia: 15% died of severe
hyponatremia, moderate hyponatremia was 50% died, and 34% mild hyponatremia died. From
test statistic calculations of pearson chi-square indicate that no relationship between degree of
hyponatremia with the outcome of tuberculous meningitis.
Conclusion: There is no a relationship between the degree of hyponatremia with the risk of death
in patients with tuberculous meningitis.
