Loss of nutrients were calculated based approach "Overseer", taking into account the output
of nutrients (such as fertilizer) are arranged so as to expected losses from the root zone soil
nitrogen and phosphorus loss risk generated by farms in kg per hectare per year. It is the
leading cause of water quality problems that exist in the area of HW. Thus, national policy is
applicable to all farms, including farms regardless of location, land use, soil type, and land
management practices on-farm.
In the past, farmers still use the Basin irrigation system, so that when the government
asks about the degradation of water quality, farmers said that the farm was the cause.
Currently, farmers no longer use the irrigation system Basin but switches to sprinkle
irrigation so that no water quality problems. This is made clear by some farmers who say that
th eir farm near the river water clean and clear.
When the issue of water quality degradation asked to cattle ranchers and sheep, they
say that they may not cause water pollution. It is because of their location away from the river
and waste (urine) farms that fall to the ground they will be filtered by the ground and when
high rainfall will be channeled away from their location.
Conclusion
Water quality degradation occurring in two areas, namely parts of New Zealand
Hurunui-Waiau and Selwyn-Waihora a major problem in Cartenbury, New Zealand. Through
research by the Canterbury Regional Council (CRC), there are two conflicts between farmers
and ranchers. In the past, farmers still use the Basin irrigation system, causing river water
pollution. But then the farmers have switched to using Sprinkle irrigation system so that now
not pollute the river water.
On the other hand, sheep and cattle ranchers said that residues from the dirt and urine of
cattle they do not cause water pollution problems river. Manure (dung) and phosphorus
(urine) produced by sheep or cattle of the farmer used as organic material for growing grass
as food animals.
The government has made a policy to address the problems of river water pollution in the
area Hurunui-Waiau, but the policy is not acceptable to farmers and ranchers. So the
government needs to find a new path to overcome the problem of water pollution in order to
be accepted by farmers and ranchers.
