10 News Item Text

News item text is a text which inform readers about events of the day
(News item text adalah jenis teks yang memberikan informasi mengenai kejadian atau peristiwa harian)

Events that are delivered to the reader are events that are considered important and deserve to be
made into news. While an event that is not important or inappropriate is known by many people is
not worth making the news.
(Kejadian yang disampaikan kepada pembaca tersebut adalah kejadian yang dianggap penting dan patut untuk dijadikan
sebuah berita. Suatu kejadian yang tidak penting atau tidak pantas diketahui oleh orang banyak tidak layak dijadikan
berita.)

SOCIAL FUNCTION

The social function of a news item text is to convey information to readers, viewers, listeners,
interesting news that deserve to be news and by means of reporting that invite attention.
(Fungsi sosial dari news item text adalah untuk menyampaikan informasi kepada pembaca, pemirsa, pendengar, berita
yang menarik dan layak menjadi berita dan dengan cara pemberitaan yang mengundang perhatian.)

STRUKTUR DAN CIRI KEBAHASAAN

Pada news item text, terdapat tiga bagian struktur kebahasaannya, yaitu:

1. Main event
Bagian ini juga dikenal dengan News worthy Event. Bagian ini adalah bagian yang menceritakan
atau berisi berita mengenai peristiwa atau kejadian inti yang biasanya ditulis dalam bentuk
ringkasan (summary).

2. Background event
Bagian yang sering disebut sebagai Elaboration ini merupakan bagian yang menceritakan latar
belakang peristiwa atau kejadian, siapa yang terlibat dan lokasi kejadian.

3. Source
Bagian terakhir adalah Source, yaitu menceritakan tentang komentar, saksi kejadian, pendapat
para ahli, dan sebagainya mengenai peristiwa atau kejadian yang diberitakan.

THE CHARACTERISTICS / LANGUAGE FEATURE OF NEWS ITEM

Pada setiap jenis teks dalam bahasa Inggris terdapat ciri kebahasaan yang dapat membedakannya
dengan jenis teks lain. Ciri dari news item text yang paling menonjol adalah bahasanya yang
singkat dan padat. Berikut ciri-ciri kebahasaan dari news item text lainnya
– Focusing on circumstances (bahasanya singkat padat dan tidak bertele-tele)
– Using material process
– Using action verbs (kata kerja yang menunjukan aktifitas)
– Using saying verbs (diberitakan, dikatakan, dikutip, mengatakan, memberitakan, mengutip)
– Using adverb of time, adverb of place, adverb of manner

Malaysian Women Suggested to Carry Condoms

Malaysian Deputy Health Ministry urged every woman to carry a condom to protect against HIV, a
news report said.

“This is not to debate them but to protect them. Women are the first ones to get exploited by their
partners (whom are infected by HIV-positive)” Abdul Latiff Ahmad was quoted as saying by Sunday
Star Newspaper. “But this just a suggestion, it’s up to them”.

Abdul latiff made remark to coincide with the International Aids Memorial day, which was celebrated
openly for the first time in Malaysia, in bid to reduce stigma for HIV-victim. In the past the event was
held behind closed door.

Last year, 745 Malaysian women were identified as HIV-positive and 193 were diagnosed with AIDS,
he said in the report. Officials have said nearly 81000 Malaysian have been infected with HIV, less
then 10 percent are woman, but the number is steadily rising.

Malaysian Aids Council president, Adeebah Kamarulzaman, was quoted as saying besides sex
workers, many women who contract HIV are housewives, were infected unknowingly by their
husbands. “It’s not that people don’t know that condoms can protect them. But there are some men
who don’t care to take precaution, even though they know they have HIV” she said.
