Present Continuous Tense

Tense ini akan digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu aksi yang terjadi selama atau sekitar waktu
pembicaraan atau menyatakan situasi serta aksi yang terjadi secara sementara atau kita harapkan
untuk berubah.

Dalam kalimat present continuous memakai to be is, am, are.

is : She, he, it
am :I
are : they, we, you

Keterangan Waktu
Keterangan waktu yang biasanya digunakan pada kalimat present continuous tense adalah:
Waktu dimana pembicaraan sedang terjadi (at the time of speaking)

 Today
 Right now
 At the moment
 At present
 Etc.

Kejadian terjadi sekitar waktu pembicaraan (around the time of speaking)

 This year
 This month
 This week
 This semester
 Etc.

Contoh Present Continuous Tense

 We will be spending our holiday in Bogor next week.

  I am waiting for my mother to pick me up.
 She is talking right now
 He is working at the beach this two weeks because he needs money to buy a new game.
Kalimat Positif

 I am reading it right now

 We are trying to bake the cake

Kalimat Negatif

 She is not sleeping right now

 They are not going to attack the goal
 We are not talking about the sales

Interrogatif / Kalimat Pertanyaan

 Is she working right now?

 Are you going to zoo today?
Penggunaan Contoh Kalimat
It is raining and I am waiting for my mother to
pick me up.
Penjelasan:

Sekarang sedang hujan dan saya sedang

a) Untuk menunjukkan suatu aksi yang
sedang berlangsung dan terjadi sekarang
menunggu ibu saya untuk menjemput saya.
Berarti, hujan dan aksi menunggu yang
dilakukan subjek sudah terjadi sebelum subjek
berbicara, berlangsung selama subjek berbicara,
dan mungkin masih akan terjadi setelah subjek
selesai berbicara. Oleh karena itu, digunakan
present continuous tense (be + present
participle).
This semester Arnold is taking five classes.
Penjelasan:

Arnold mengambil lima kelas pada semester ini.

b) Untuk membicarakan aksi yang terjadi
sekitar waktu pembicaraan
Kejadian ini terjadi sekitar waktu pembicaraan.
She is spending her holiday in Bangkok next
week.
Penjelasan:

Dia akan menghabiskan liburannya di Bangkok

minggu depan. Ini berarti rencana liburannya di
Bangkok pada minggu depan kemungkinan
c) Untuk membicarakan rencana yang sudah besar akan terjadi.
pasti akan terjadi dalam waktu dekat
Mengingat present continuous tense tidak hanya digunakan untuk menunjukkan kejadian yang
berlangsung sekarang tetapi juga masa depan yang dekat, maka penggunaan keterangan waktu
sangatlah penting untuk diperhatikan. Umumnya, keterangan waktu berikut digunakan pada
kalimat present continuous tense:

Pada saat terjadi pembicaraan (at the time of Pada waktu sekitar waktu pembicaraan (around
speaking) the time of speaking)
 Right now  This month
 At the moment  This year
 Today  This week
 At present  This semester
 Etc.  Etc.
Simple Present vs Present Continuous
Untuk memudahkan dalam membedakan penggunaan simple tense dan present continuous,
perhatikan penjelasan berikut:
Simple Present
a) Untuk aksi yang terjadi berulang-ulang atau
secara reguler.
Contoh kalimat:
o Alan reads one book a day.
o Shella usually walks to her campus.
o The odd semester starts on September.
b) Untuk menyatakan fakta, situasi, dan
keadaan yang kita tidak harapkan untuk
berubah.
Contoh kalimat:
o   Shella lives in Bogor.
o   Alan reads book everyday.
Present Continuous
a) Untuk aksi yang terjadi selama waktu
pembicaraan.
Contoh kalimat:
 Alan cannot pick up the phone right
now because he is reading his book.
Untuk aksi yang berlangsung sekitar waktu
pembicaraan
Contoh kalimat:
 Alan is reading three books a day these
days because he needs to catch up to his
personal reading goal.
b) Present continuous tense untuk menyatakan
situasi dan aksi yang terjadi hanya sementara
atau kita harapkan untuk berubah.
Contoh kalimat:
 Shella is living in Depok for the time
being due to her study.
 Alan is working at a library this two
weeks because his classes are on break.
Meaning

1. Present continuous is used to talk about something that is happening at the time of
speaking. The action is not finished.
 He is speaking to John.
 What is she doing?
2. Present continuous is used to talk about temporary situations.
 I‘m living in London at the moment.
 Why is she moving house?
3. Present continuous is used to talk about changing situations.
 You’re getting taller and taller every day.
 The weather‘s getting warmer.
4. Present continuous is used to talk about repeated actions around the time of speaking.
 I’m seeing Jane a lot these days.
5. Present continuous is used to talk about future arrangements.
 I’m meeting my father at the airport at 5 o’clock tomorrow.
 We’re having lunch together at the weekend.
6. Present continuous is used with words such as ALWAYS to talk about things that happen
repeatedly (sometimes to say that something is irritating or annoying).
 She‘s always complaining about how difficult her life is.
7. When we are talking about how someone looks or feels, present continuous or present
simple can be used.
 How are you feeling? / How do you feel?
 Jenny is looking really good today? / Jenny looks really good today.
