READING COMPREHENSION
Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo, and like him she was very skillful with
th
e bow and arrow. When very young, she went to her father, Zeus, and
begged him to allow her to live a free and happy life upon the beautiful mountains.
Zeus granted her wish, and so she became the great huntress-goddess of the fields
and forest
As Apollo was the god of the sun and the bright daylight, so Artemis was the
goddess of the moon. She loved to hunt by moonlight; and when the Greeks made
statues of her, they sometimes represented her with a torch held high in one hand
and a bow in the other.
Artemis always had a band of maidens with her, who ran beside her, and
took care of her dogs, and carried her arrows. She could run so swiftly that she
could overtake the fleetest deer in the hunt. She and her maidens would dash
through the forests with cries and merry laughter, and then when the hunt was
over they would bathe in the pure mountain streams.
Artemis loved the woods and mountains so dearly that she rarely left them
for the cities of men. But she was very selfish in her love of them, and did not wish
to be disturbed in her enjoyment.
There was once a young man named Actaeon, who was a great hunter, and who
often wandered through the forests alone with his dogs.
One day he came upon the goddess Artemis, playing with her maidens upon
the banks of a stream. Instead of going away at once, as he should have done, he
stood quite still and watched them. This made Artemis so angry that she changed
him into a deer, and his own dogs then turned upon him, and tore him to pieces.
Artemis loved all the animals of the forest, but her favorite was the deer. Once a
great king of the Greeks killed a doe of which Artemis was very fond. This king was
just starting out upon a great war, and he had many vessels in the harbor all ready
to sail. But day after day passed, and the wind blew constantly from the wrong
direction, and the vessels could not put out to sea. The Greeks grew impatient, and

A kind of negative emotion, stress, brings negative effects to our health. Stress is
linked to the sixth most cause of death, after heart disease, cancer, lung ailments,
accidents, cirrhosis of the liver and suicide. (“The Stress Solution: An Active Plan to
Manage the Stress in Your Life,” Lyle H. Miller, Ph.D. and Alma Dell Smith, Ph.D.).
Besides, according to AmericanAcademy of Family Physicians, two-thirds of all office
visits to family physicians are due to stress-related symptoms. Another statistic
shows that more than 1/3 of Americans say they have had an illness that was
primarily caused by stress (APA 2005).
Another negative emotion, anger, is also not good for our health. High levels of
hostility have been found to predict heart disease more often than high cholesterol,
cigarette smoking or obesity. In addition, according to Dr. Linda Page, Naturopathic
Doctor and author, scientists are proving that repeated episodes of anger and
frustration cause nervous system imbalances that are detrimental not only to the
heart, but to the brain and the hormonal and immune systems.
Conversely, a positive outlook can help keep us healthy. Research supports the
idea that having
a positive outlook can extend one’s life (“Emotional Longevity: What Really
Determines How Long You Live,” Norman B. Anderson and Elizabeth P.
Anderson, 2003). According to Veterans
Administration Normative Aging Study, men high in optimism were less than half as
likely to develop heart disease than were the more pessimistic men.
Based on the above facts, we can conclude that when it comes to your body,
your emotion really matters.

19. What does the text explain about emotion and health?
A. When our emotional health declines, our physical health also declines.
B. When our emotional health declines, our physical health increases.
C. When our emotional health increases, our physical health declines.
D. There is no relationship between emotional and physical health.
E. Not all negative emotions are disadvantageous for our body

Alexander Graham Bell was born on March 3, 1847, to Alexander Melville Bell and
Eliza Grace Symonds Bell in Edinburgh, Scotland, who was one of the primary
inventors of the telephone. He also did important works in communication for the
deaf.
Bell was educated in Edinburgh and London. At the edge of 16 , Bell himself
began researching the mechanics of speech. In 1870, Bell emigrated with his family
to Canada, and the following year he moved to the United States to teach. There
he pionereed a system called visible speech, developed by his father, to teach deaf
mute children. In 1872, Bell founded a school in Boston to train teachers of the
deaf. Bell was appointed professor of vocal physiology in 1873.
Bell had long been fascinated by the idea of transmitting speech, and by 1875
had come up with a simple receiver that could turn electricity into sound. Then,
Bell was granted a patent for the telephone on March 1876 and it developed
quickly.
In 1880, Bell was awarded the French Volta Prize for his invention. With the
money, he founded the Volta Laboratory in Washington, where he continued
experiments in communication, in medical research, and in techinique for teaching
speech to the deaf.
When Bell died on August 1922, in honor of him, all telephone services in the U.S
were stopped for one minutes.
21. From the text we can conclude that Alexander Garham Bell...
A. moved to United State in 1871
B. continued his experiment before he was awarded the prize.
C. was granted a patent for the telephone in 1880.
D. only did experiments in communication.
E. died when the telephone hadnot developed yet
2. Natural juices: You can rub your scalp with either garlic juice, onion juice or ginger juice. Leave it
on overnight and wash it thoroughly in the morning.
3. Get a head message: Massaging your scalp for a few minutes daily will help stimulate circulation.
Good circulation in the scalp keeps hair follicles active. Circulation may be improved through
massage by using a few drops of lavender or bay essential oil in an almond or sesame oil base.
4. Antioxidants: Apply warm green tea (two bags brewed in one cup of water) on your scalp and
leave this mixture on for an hour and then rinse. Green tea contains antioxidants which prevent
hair loss and boost hair growth.
5. Practice meditation: Believe it or not, most of the times, the root cause for hair loss is stress and
tension. Meditation can help in reducing that and restore hormonal balance.
26. When following the the tips above, what is going on for an hour?
A.Wearing a shower cap on the scalp covered in warm grease.
B.Doing regular meditation to reduce stress.
C. Rubbing scalp to reduce its’ pain.
D. Applying shampoo to hair.
E. Heating the oil treatments.

Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you're sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next
day. It's forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information.
Studies show that a good night's sleep improves learning. Whether you're learning math, how to
play the piano, how to perfect your golf swing, or how to drive a car, sleep helps enhance your
learning and problem-solving skills. Sleep also helps you pay attention, make decisions, and be
creative.
Physical Health often relate to sleep quality. It plays an important role in your physical health.
For example, sleep is involved in healing and repair of your heart and blood vessels. Ongoing
sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood
pressure, diabetes, and stroke.
Besides that, sleep also helps maintain a healthy balance of the hormones that make you feel
hungry (ghrelin) or full (leptin). When you don't get enough sleep, your level of ghrelin goes up
and your level of leptin goes down. This makes you feel hungrier than when you're well-rested.
33. What is the correlation between quality of sleep and physical health?
A. The lack of sleep has no relation to illnesses.
B. Sleep is often related to reduce health problems.
C. Sleep deficiency causes increased risk of many diseases.
D. Patients with heart disease will be cured by enough sleeping.
E. The good quality of sleep will contribute to the increased number of health risk.

Dear Sir/Madam,
My school has children from many different economic backgrounds, but a large
percentage come from lower-income families. Nevertheless, our tests show that
the children do well and benefit from the excellent work our teacher do. Last year
our school moved from the 24th to 5th place according to the official assessment
by the state government. This clearly not the “failure” that the article suggests.
Your sincerely,

The term of “tsunami” comes from the Japanese which means harbor (“tsu”) and wave
(“nami”). A tsunami is a series of waves generated when water in a lake or a sea is rapidly
displaced on a massive scale.
A tsunami can be generated when the sea floor abruptly deforms and vertically
displaces the overlying water. Such large vertical movements of the earth’s crust can occur
at plate boundaries.
As the displaced water mass moves under the influence of gravity to regain its
equilibrium, it radiates across the ocean like ripples on a pond.
Tsunami always bring great damage. Most of the damage is caused by the huge mass of
water behind the initial wave front, as the height of the sea keeps rising fast and floods
powerfully into the coastal area.
