Defination Modifier
Modifier literally means to change. Modifier is
changing a word, phrase, or clause and its meaning
by giving additional information in a sentence and
has a function adjective or adverb.
Function
Modifier serves to clarify or make clearer the
meaning of the subject, predicate, direct object,
or indirect object.
FUNCTION MODIFIER
• AS ADJECTIVE (explains nouns)
Example: She found a bar of chocolate put on my
bag “Put on my bag” (participle phrase) functions
as an adjective describing “chocolate” as a noun
• AS ADVERB (explain another verb,
adjective or adverb)
Example: When you want to shcool, She came
(is an adverb clause) which asks “when”

Defination
• Adjective : An adjective that is used to
describe a noun or pronoun.
• Clause : Is a collection of two or more words
consisting of a subject and a predicate but not
yet perfect so that it cannot be called a
sentence.
Essentially an adjective clause is a clause that
cannot stand alone (dependent clause) which
functions to modify or explain nouns and
pronouns in complex sentences.
Example :
• the girl who looks sad is reading a book
Adjective clause : “ who looks sad “ Contains
a subject and a verb that serves to explain the
subject “ the girl “

The formula for using an
adjective clause in a sentence :
1. Must have a subject and a verb.
2. Must start with relative pronouns or
relative verbs
3. Functions as an adjective, which answers
questions such as what, how much, which,
and so on.
Relative pronoun :
• A clause that begins with the pronoun
who, whom, whose, that, or which. Serves
to explain a noun or pronoun.
Example : the man who called me yesterday is
my uncle.
The main sentence is “ the man is my uncle “,
while “ who called me yesterday “ is an adjective
clause to explain “ the man “ to be more specific
which man is meant.
Relative adverb :
• A clause that starts with the words when,
where, or why is used to describe or explain a
noun.
Example : it is the restauran where we met
two daya ago.
The main sentence is “ this is the restaurant “
while “ where we met two power ago “ is an
adjective clause to describe the place.
