ABSTRACT
Antimicrobial activities, antioxidant and acute toxicity of ethanol extract of the roots,
stems, leaves and flowers of bambu-bambu plants (Polygonum pulchrum Blume) have been
done. Extracts was produced by maseration method with ethanol. Antimicrobial test used agar
diffusion method with well technique to Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 gram positive,
Escherichia coli ATCC 35218 gram negative and Candida albicans ATCC 10231. Antioxidant
activity test was established by DPPH method (1,1-diphenil-pikrilhidrazil). Acute toxicity test
used Brine Shrimp Lethality Test method (BSLT). The results of antibacterial activity ethanol
extract by DDH value of root, stem, leaf, and flower to S. aureus ATCC 25923 respectively were
3,5 mm, 2.5 mm, 2.25 mm, and 2,62 mm. To E. coli ATCC 35218, DDH value of ethanol extract
of root, stem, leaf and flower respectively were 2.25 mm, 2.12 mm, 1,62 mm, and 1,75 mm.
Whereas, this extracts have not to fungus C. albicans ATCC 10231, compare to Vitamin C with
3.97 mg/L in IC50 value, ethanol extract of root and stem of P. pulchrum Bl were very strong
antioxidants with IC50 value respectively 25.2 mg/L and 43.26 mg/L, ethanol extract of leaf of P.
pulchrum Bl was strong antioxidant with IC50 value 66.32 mg/L, and ethanol extract of flower of
P. pulchrum Bl was weak antioxidant with IC50 value 202.96 mg/L. Base on toxicity analysis by
BSLT method, Ethanol extract of root and steam were toxic with LC50 value respectively 933,086
g/mL and 919,588 g/mL, whereas, Ethanol extract of leaf and flower were not toxic with LC50
value respectively 2207,06 g/mL and 1081,90 g/mL.
