ABSTRACT
Aluminum and its alloys are non-ferrous metals that are widely used in the shipping
industry because it has a lightweight, and has relatively high tensile strength and good corrosion
resistance. Transient heating is a method to reduce the distortion by providing local heat around
the welding path. It is to retard rapid cooling due to uneven welding heat, that cooling process
could be simultaneously.
Heat during welding process will affect the distortion changes in material that
furthermore influence material mechanical properties. In this research, the distance of different
transient temperature between 5cm, 10cm and 14cm are used. The temperature determined in 150o
C with 10 mm/s welding speed by using argon, CO2 and O2 and AWS 5356 electrode. Material
used in this research was 5083 aluminum with 3mm thick plate. The type of welding used was
Metal Inert Gas (MIG).
Examinations conducted was distortion, hardness, and tensile tests. Results shows that
the application of transient temperature during the welding process can reduce residual distortion,
influence hardness value and tensile strength. At 14 cm distance of transient temperature the
minimum distortion achieved; the highest hardness value and maximum tensile strength occurs at
the distance of 5 cm transient temperature.
