PAST TENSE AND PAST PROGESSIVE TENSE

Penggunaan When

Kata when berfungsi sebagai conjunction yang digunakan untuk kejadian singkat atau interupsi, jadi
when digunakan pada dua peristiwa yang berurutan, dan when biasanya diikuti dengan tense non
progressive (non continuous) tapi when bisa diikuti verb -ing Gerund. Contoh:
1. I was studying English when my friend came
Ketika temanku datang saya sedang belajar bahasa Inggris

2. When you reach stage 40 you will get an epic weapon

Ketika kamu mencapai stage 40 kamu akan mendapatkan senjata yang hebat

3. Japanese people apoligize when they come late

Orang Jepang meminta maaf ketika mereka datang terlambat

4. I will buy a new camera when I get salary

Saya akan membeli kamera baru ketika saya mendapat gajih

5. You were sleeping when I came to your home last night

Kamu sedang tidur ketika aku datang ke rumahmu tadi malam

Penggunaan While
Sama halnya dengan when, while juga berperan sebagai conjunction dan while digunakan untuk kejadian
yang terjadi secara bersamaan dan, jika when biasanya selalu diikuti tense non progressive maka while
sebaliknya, while selalu diikuti oleh kata kerja+ing atau tense progressive (continuous). Contoh:
1. While I was studying English, my sister was watching television
Ketika saya sedang belajar bahasa Inggris, saudari saya sedang menonton TV

2. I came to your home while you was sleeping last night

Saya datang ke rumahmu ketika kamu sedang tidur tadi malam

3. Can I really learn a new language while sleeping?

Bisakah saya belajar bahasa baru ketika sedang tidur?

4. I found a wallet this morning while I was walking to school

Saya menemukan sebuah dompet pagi ini ketika saya sedang berjalan ke sekolah

5. Please, don't disturb him while he's studying

Tolong jangan ganggu dia ketika dia sedang belajar

agar lebih mudah, cukup mengingat kata kerjanya saja, jika kata kerjanya progressive maka gunakanlah
while, dan jika tidak, maka gunakanlah when. when digunakan pada kejadian yang berlangsung dengan
cepat dan berurutan, sedang while digunakan pada kejadian yang sedang berlangsung / terjadi secara
bersamaan.
