Must

Must dapat diartikan harus.

Dalam kalimat, modals must ditempatkan setelah subject dan sebelum verb.
Berikut rumus kalimatnya:

(+) SUBJECT + MUST + VERB 1 + OBJECT

Contoh:

I must finish my homework now.

All students must make final report.

(-) SUBJECT + MUST NOT + VERB 1 + OBJECT

Contoh:

We must not park the car here.

The employees must not smoke in the room.

Fungsi must

1. Untuk menyatakan kewajiban atau keharusan yang berasal dari diri sendiri.
Atau apa yang menjadi kewajiban untuk dikerjakan berasal dari tekad sendiri.

Contoh:

I must help my friend, he is in a trouble.

I must go to school earlier tomorrow.

We must talk to Mr. Russo to solve our problem.

We must win the competition.

2. Must digunakan untuk sebuah kewajiban / keharusan dalam sebuah kalimat

formal atau dalam aturan tertulis.

Contoh:

All of the passengers must use the seat belt.

The audiences must turn the cell phone off during the presentation.

Students must be punctual during the examination.

3. Memberikan nasihat yang kuat.

Nasihat kuat diberikan saat kita merasa bahwa apa yang disarankan
merupakan sesuatu yang sangat menarik dan rugi untuk dilewatkan.
Atau kita juga memberikan nasihat yang kuat karena apabila tidak dilakukan
maka akan mengakibatkan sesuatu yang fatal.

Contoh:

You must watch Avengers Endgame movie. It's awesome.

You must go to mesjid al-Haram when you visit Mecca.

You must be on time tomorrow otherwise you'll get fire.

You must submit the report this afternoon. Today is the last day.

4. Menyatakan sebuah larangan.

Larangan yang menggunakan modals must harus dalam bentuk negative.

Contoh:

Everyone must not smoke around the children.

Children must not access the internet without being watched.

The visitors must not touch the statues.

Should juga berarti harus.
Tapi should memiliki beberapa fungsi yang berbeda dengan must dan have to.

Contoh:

You should see the doctor.

They should be more polite to their neighbor.

Fungsi should

1. Untuk memberikan sebuah nasihat yang tidak terlalu kuat.

Saat kita memberikan nasihat dengan menggunakan modals should, seseorang
dapat menerima atau menolak nasihat tersebut.

Contoh:

If you want a muscular body, you should exercise regularly.

You should save your money for your future.

2. Memberikan nasihat yang bernada negatif.

Contoh:

You shouldn't drink coffee every day.

You shouldn't be too hard to yourself.

You shouldn't finish the report on Saturday, the deadline is Tuesday.

3. Should dapat digunakan untuk menyatakan sebuah pendapat.

Contoh:

I think everybody should use bicycle to work to reduce the air pollution.

The government should close all the tobacco industries to reduce the

cigarette's victims.

They should pay the employees more if they want their loyalty.
