Comparative Degree

Untuk lebih memahami comparative degree, coba perhatikan kalimat di bawah ini:

- Andre is tall. (Andre itu tinggi)

- Andre is taller than me. ( Andre lebih tinggi daripada saya)

- Andre is tallest. (Andre adalah yang paling tinggi)

Berdasarkan perbandingan dari kalimat di atas, dapat ditemukan tiga jenis sebagai
degreee of comparison.

Dalam membandingkan dua hal, tidak hanya comparative tapi juga akan menemukan
degree of comparison untuk positive, dan superlative.

Jika, pada comparative menggunakan tambahan "er" dalam adjective-nya, maka untuk
membentuk superlative kata sifatnya ditambahkan dengan "est".

Adapun dalam membentuk comparative dan superlative, bentuknya akan tergantung

pada jumlah suku kata (syllables) dalam kata sifat aslinya.

Penambahan imbuhan pada adjective juga harus memperhatikan, apakah kata sifat
tersebut termasuk bentuk regular verb atau irregular verb.

1. Comparative

Comparative bisa menggunakan kata-kata yang menjadi sinyal untuk membandingkan

dan menggambarkan dua atau lebih hal. Kalimat comparative biasanya dicirikan dengan
kata "than".

adjective/adverb + er than atau more + adjective/adverb than

Untuk menyatakan hal serupa atau kalimat dua kata benda yang dibandingkan, bisa
menggunakan pola ini:
Noun (subject) + verb + comparative adjective + than + noun (object)

Contoh kalimat comparative degree:

-This tree is bigger than any other tree in this street. (Pohon ini lebih besar dari pohon
lain di jalan ini)

- Andri's dog runs faster than Bayu's dog. (Anjing Andri berlari lebih cepat dari anjing
Bayu)

- I am taller than Ratna. (Saya lebih tinggi dari Ratna)

- You are more tolerant than last week. (Kamu lebih toleran dari minggu lalu)

2. Superlative

Superlative digunakan untuk menggambarkan suatu objek yang berada pada batas atas
atau bawah suatu kualitas, misalnya tertinggi, terkecil, tercepat, dan lain-lain. Dalam
kalimat superlative, subjeknya dibandingkan dengan sekelompok objek.

adjective/adverb + est atau most + adjective/adverb

Maka, rumus pola kalimat yang digunakan adalah sebagai berikut:

Noun (subject) + verb + the + superlative adjective + noun (object).

Contoh kalimat superlative:

- This ice cream is the cheapest among others. (Es krim ini paling murah di antara yang
lainnya)

- Angelia is the cleverest student in class. (Angelia adalah siswa terpandai di kelas)
- Physics is the most difficult lesson for me. (Fisika adalah pelajaran yang paling sulit
bagiku)

- Burj Khalifa is the highest building in the world. (Burj Khalifa adalah gedung tertinggi di
dunia)
