Global
Epilepsi merupakan salah satu kelainan dengan prevalensi cukup tinggi di
antara kelainan neurologis lainnya.
Diperkirakan 70 juta penduduk dunia mengalami epilepsi. Rata-rata insidensi
epilepsi adalah 50,4 per 100.000 populasi per tahun, di mana negara
berpendapatan tinggi (high income countries) memiliki insidensi yang lebih
rendah yaitu 45,0 per 100.000 populasi per tahun sementara di negara yang
berpenghasilan rendah (low middle income countries) insidensinya 81,7 per
100.000 populasi per tahun.

Indonesia
Data epidemiologi epilepsi di Indonesia sangat terbatas. Estimasi
penderita epilepsi di Indonesia adalah 1,5 juta dengan prevalensi 0,5-0,6% dari
penduduk Indonesia. Mengacu pada data insidensi epilepsi di dunia,
insidensinya 50,3 per 100.000 populasi per tahun. Frekuensi terjadinya
epilepsi menurut usia di Indonesia juga sangat terbatas. Namun pada umumnya
di negara berkembang sebaran penderita epilepsi banyak pada anak dan
dewasa muda dibandingkan kelompok umur lainnya.

Terapi nonfarmakologis untuk epilepsi meliputi :
Diet, pembedahan, dan stimulasi saraf vagus (VNS).
Stimulator saraf vagal adalah perangkat medis implan yang disetujui FDA
untuk digunakan sebagai tambahan terapi dalam mengurangi frekuensi
kejang pada orang dewasa dan remaja yang berusia lebih dari 12 tahun
dengan onset parsial kejang yang tahan terhadap AED.
